Two days to go........
« on: July 09, 2019, 08:02:17 AM »
Our first trip to Yellowstone/ or anywhere out West!

The Motor home is ready, or as ready as she will ever be. I sunk more money into her than I planned to get her ready for this trip but thatís done no so now on we go.

I honestly wouldnít have been able to plan this trip as I have if not for many of you here.
Gary, thank you for all of you advice. Although I've been from ny down as far as NC and far north as Bar Harbor when it comes to traveling West I am truly a rookie.

First leg is a long one. An overnight rest stop in Ohio about 630 miles. I am blessed to have a very capable relief Captain in my wife. Sheís truly awesome. Lots of books, games, legos and movies for the two boys.
Looking forward to getting to Indiana Dunes State Park. A day in Chicago via train and two days on the Beach at Indiana Dunes National Park. Then Monday itís off to the Field of Dreams in Iowa and a rest stop ďsomewhereĒ before we drive to the Badlands and our next campground near Rushmore on Tuesday.

Long legs to start......then lots of stops starting with Rushmore/ two nights in deadwood/ devils tower/ two nights on Cody before making our way across Yellowstone into West Yellowstone. Renting a car for 5 days when we get there to buzz around the park. Iíll let you all know how we are doing...... just a few finishing touches before we go and then we are off.......I really canít wait. So much I havenít seen in my life. We bought this motor home to change all that! Thanks everyone

Sounds like fun, although that 630 mile leg is a killer! Be sure to stop frequently & get some exercise. Or, just set the cruise control and have a lie down in back.  :P

There's probably something in the manual telling people not to do that lol

Made it to Indian meadow rest stop on the Ohio Turnpike. 20 bucks for overnight plug in. Great rest stop. 660 miles. I did not need to go to the bullpen although my wife wife for many times. A quick 2 1/2 our jaunt  in the morning to Indiana in on the train to Chicago. Iíve never been Ron chicago.  This is amazing I never been to Lake Michigan neither and I will have two days to do nothing but sit on the beach and relax before we hit the road on Monday. Having a cold beer to wind down and calling it a night.  Have a great night all!

Nice Peggy!

People tell me that they can drove longer distances in a car. Maybe my mind has been tricked but I get much less road fatigue in this 31 footer than any car Iíve driven. The seat is so comfortable and the idea that I can sprawl out on the couch if I get tired gives me a boost. We got in to Indiana yesterday on just a few hours sleep. Took the train to Chicago. Walked about 12 miles with the family. Did The Architectural boat tour on the Chicago River, ate too much and slammed a cocktail wherever and whenever I had the opportunity. Kids crapped out, took the train back.

Checked into Indiana Dunes State Park today, spent the day on the shores of Lake Michigan. At the campsite now. One more day if R&at then itís off to the afield if Dreams. Thatís a good 4 hours push. Then another 600 to the badlands....but Iíll stop somewhere Monday Night...not sure where yet. Thatís one of the few parts of the trip Iím doing on the fly.

I recommend you see the Minuteman Museum (same exit as Badlands National Park on your way west) tour the launch facility and take the self-guided tour of the missile site. https://www.nps.gov/mimi/index.htm

I heard this is an incredible stop. I did know it was so close. My son is always asking about missles and the silos around the country. Itís right near the badlands exit? We will definitely check it out. Thank you!

All three sites are within about 9 miles of each other. Start are the museum/visitors center, this is first if you are traveling from east to west. You buy the tickets for the launch facility tour at the museum. The launch facility is a few miles west. It is a very interesting guided tour. I parked on the side of the road above the launch facility with our rig. The silo is a few more miles west. It is a self-guided tour with your cell phone. Plenty of room to park. We were the only ones there. When you are done, you will now know where the dirt roads go off to at each exit as well where all the 3-phase power lines are headed into the fields and over the horizon...

Thanks for that link. That was fascinating and now makes me want to visit!  I was Navy during the cold war but all that stuff is really fun to see. The crypto museum at Ft Meade (NSA) was a real fun re-visit.  Some of the stuff on display we couldn't even mention by name when I was in because just the name of it was classified, and here it is now for all the world to see. How times change, eh?

You say they are displaying it now? Hmmm that is interesting.

The Titan Missile Museum south of Tuscon is very interesting, the location is in the middle of the greater Tuscon urban sprawl which has all occurred since the silo was constructed, On one side is a giant man made hill which is part of a vast open Copper mine which was several miles away when the silo was built, on the other side just a few blocks away is I-19 and a Wal-Mart Supercenter.

p.s. another cold war place to tour if you ever get the chance is the congressional survival bunker under the Greenbrier hotel in White Sulphur Springs WV.

Mike, I'm glad you're making the long sections of your trip still in good shape. A lot depends on your age, and if you're young, you'll be able to do a lot more than if you're in your 60's or 70's.

When you get to Deadwood, try to make the time to see Customer State Park. You won't regret it. Mt. Rushmore is nice, especially if you're patriotic and/or into history. I was very disappointed with Crazy Horse because of the amount of work, or lack of, they have done on the monument in 80 years. They don't expect to have it completed in our life times. You already said you were going to visit Devils Tower. You may want to do that on your way to Yellowstone since it's not far out of the way.

We were lucky to be staying in Deadwood during their annual Wild West days, but you'll still be able to see daily street shootings. I don't know if it's the area or the RV park we stayed in, but we found the absolute worst water while staying there, so be careful.

Enjoy your trip.

Nope.  KW26's open for the world to see, all of the old Orestes equipment, autodin, all of it.  They have old enigma machines, KW37's, and some neat interactive displays.  It's just off the Interstate at the entrance to NSA but before you have to go through security.  See: https://www.nsa.gov/about/cryptologic-heritage/museum/

I was a radioman but worked primarily in crypto. Med cruises (67-68, USS Shangra La CV38, then shore based at Atlantic Fleet Weapons Range (AFWR) and NAVCOMSTA Puerto Rico, Ft. Allen)

I was a crypto repairman in the AF. I worked on KW26s and KG3s. Never had to repair a KG3. Remember cranking a knob around and around to get synchronized with the remote end? The encryption used in our pcs and phones these days is far superior to what those machines could do.
