The four nights we stayed at Ft. Robinson State Park, NE (3 miles W. of Crawford) were about right for us. After reading an article in the FMCA magazine about this fort/park we decided to see for ourselves. We initially reserved two nights at the Red Cloud campground (30/50 amp, FHU), rather than the Soldier Creek campground which has mostly 30 amp, electric only. After the first night we decided we needed more time, so extended for an extra two nights.

We ate two dinners in the restaurant in the park (pretty good food, roast beef was outstanding), and we also took the Chuckwagon buffalo stew dinner ride (tasty stew, good cornbread), the hayrack steak dinner ride (excellent ribeye, perfect baked potato) and the hayrack breakfast ride (scrambled eggs, ham, home fries, flapjacks -- pretty good, but not outstanding). One evening we went to the Post Playhouse and saw The Music Man, very well done. They actually had a matinee show (2 PM) and an evening show (8 PM), rotating among 5 shows. We'd like to have seen Mary Poppins, too, but there wasn't quite time for that.

We went through most of the museum displays (there are several, a couple being extensive), roamed through an enlisted barracks and a duplex officer's quarters, as well as some other things. The horsedrawn wagon tour (about an hour) was very informative and enjoyable, too.

Thursday night they had a free rodeo. We soon saw why it was free (it was fun, though). The participants were a lot of the park staff, apparently part of their duties. The only event they had that you find in most rodeos was team calf roping, in which a couple of teams didn't get the rope on the calf at all, several of the headers got the rope on the head/horns, but only one of them got one hind leg and one got two hind legs -- the rest missed those completely. In other words, they weren't pro's. But it was neat to watch. Other events were musical chairs (on horseback), find your boots, the kid hide  ride (timed) where the kid is at one end, the horse and rider at the other, then the rider goes to the other end, kid gets on the hide (dragged behind the horse), then they go back to the other end of the arena. And there were a couple of other games, though I forget what they were.

So all in all, a good time and worth the trip.
