Towed miles v driven miles

The friendliest place on the web for anyone with an RV or an interest in RVing!

We do a lot of driving but split our driving between the MH and the toad.  Not really too convenient to drive the MH to the market, post office, flea market, of on the White Rim Trail or Chicken Corners trail. ;D ;D

Sorry Smokey,

Didn't mean to make you make a mad dash for the Valium. No more mention of 'that' word ;D

Unless you plan on driving your MH to places and leaving the toad at the CG, you'll probably put more miles on the toad than the MH. When you're towing it, the motor may not be turning (hopefully not), but those wheels keep "Rollin', rollin' rollin'..." anyway.

Smoky, If you like malts the very best in the country are found at the Yellowstone drug store in Shoshone Wyo,

I Think Ron misunderstood what you meant by single malts. Ron, that's single malt Scotch Whisky - just ask Tom!  And no, I didn't misspell whisky :)

Electronic odometers don't register towed miles.

Terry, Oops, thought I'd responded to this sooner. The electronic odometer on our Burb does register towed miles.

Tom

That's strange, yours is the first "modern" car I've heard about that does that.  ??? ???  Are your sure you are turning the ignition key to the correct position? Are there any fuses that you have to pull?

Bernie, on the Burb, Tahoe and Envoy, you tow with the ignition key out. There's no mechanical lock on the steering of these cars. The Tahoe and Envoy do not rack up towing miles, but the Burb does. There is probably a fuse I could pull, although it's not identified in the owners manual.

Ron:

Yes we will drive toqad to market, post office etc.  Not to White rim or whatever.  That is why I cannot compare an suv to a Taurus.

As for Bryce, it is not that far from the St. George WalMart .  ;D ;D ;D

LOL  and Tom proves one of my points.

Ron... you almost had me dashing to your drug store.  I have found great malts in stranger places than that!  ;D

Thanks Karl, I'll check it out. Couldn't you have told me that 15,000 miles ago  ;D

If all you're going to do is drive from campground to campground and never use the Taurus to go anywhere but to the local Walmart, you're going to miss out on much that's worthwhile to see in this country.  What a shame. :(

LOL Ned, I never said that.

I simply do not believe I will drive my toad nearly as much as most people are saying here.  And yet I will see the USA which is the main reason I am doing this.

Why argue?  In a years time the data will be in and we will know the truth.  :D

Smoky,

And you can spend your malt money on fuel for the Taurus to balance the budget. ;)

Ned,

One can save even more money and drive much less by just taking the MH from Walmart to Walmart and stay until they kick you out.    If you want a little variety, you can stay at an occasional casino.  ;D

Phil,

Good idea.  A national tour of all the WalMarts :)  Don't need a toad at all for that.  Sounds like more fun than Lorna's tour of state capitols.

Lorna's tour would be ok if you could camp out in the capitol parking lot.  My parents did the state capitol tour over several years when I was young.  It was great but we cheated and stayed in motels.  ;D

We like to stay at campgrounds, COE campgrounds if we can. But then we use our car for more than just shopping :)

Not much room for large vehicles around the capitols, but most of them have free visitor parking.  I even go on some of the visits.

Ned,

Not much room for large vehicles around New England...just ask Fred. <GD&R>

One thing to consider is the effect of towed v/s driven on the toad

Of course if you tow 4 wheels UP (Trailer it) this is very little (some wear on the suspension)

But if you tow it 4 down, like most of us do, The effect is greater

Engine- ZERO WEAR

Transmission - Depends on the ride, if you use an axel or drive shaft lock/disconnect, ZERO WEAR

Differential,  RWD with dissconnect, very little wear,  FWD, I'd guess normal wear (These things normally last a long long time, the gears run in an oil bath so they are among the best lubricated parts in your car)

Shocks,  No matter how you tow,,, Normal wear  Likewise springs

Front end (Steering parts) Trailer very low wear, 4-down, less than normal wear

Tires, trailered no wear, 4 down very low wear

one thing you need to know though... If you blow a tire on the towed when towing 4-down... You may well not notice it till SERIOUS damage is done to the towed (Worst case is destroyed by fire) and possibly the MH as well...  (On my towed, if a tire blows the tread tends to fall into the rim (like those old space saver spares that got bigger when you inflated them) and you can actually drive on it CAREFULLY.  however if this were to happen at Freeway speeds, and I did not notice it, the tire would quickly shred and start shreding the fender and wheel well)

Thankfully... There is a solution... Pressure Pro monitors on all tires.. They get real vocal when you have a blow out, even tell you which tire is flat!!!
