If so, I'll share a great trick (using a klonk/clonk) with you.  If not, it wouldn't be worth killing the pixels.

Newt, I have to admit I had no idea what a wels catfish was until I Googled and found this.

That could be because we don't have them.  An older species than ours from the looks of them.

A UK friend and his brother are going to spend a couple weeks with us in October and we'll be mostly fishing.  Budgie was a professional catfish guide on the Ebro River in Spain for a number of years and introduced me to the clonk and how to use it.

I found one company in the States that sells several models along with a how-to video.  http://www.catfishconnection.com has an aluminum version http://catalog.catfishconnection.com/itemdetail.php?itemnumber=CCALUM and last time I looked, had a similar one in wood.

I've only used the wood variety.  Basically you do a short pull through the water and if done right, it makes an interesting 'glug' sound that actually attracts both Wels and Flatheads.  Most likely is that those two are solitary and territorial preds who think they are hearing competition.

If you know where the is probably hanging out waiting on a meal, you most likely can't fish there since they like log jams and similar cover.  Anchor a reasonable distance away. cast your live bait toward their lair, and clonk a couple of times.  They will often swim toward the sound and if they find your bait in between, will slurp it up for a snack.

Live bait only and for the bigguns, a carp of 3-5 lbs is a perfect size for a meal.  The smaller flattys  like bluegills for a meal and even the big gals think highly of them as a snack.
