May steps take a beating from road grime and water. Paint peels and they look bad. I do keep the lubricated so they work looking for any tricks or product to keep paint on them to keep them looking as good as possible.
 
Good prep including sanding to bare metal and a suitable primer followed by a quality epoxy paint works pretty well for me. I still have to touch up rock chips now and then though.
 
Wire brush to remove rust scale and loose paint, a rust "converter" product (Ospho, Corroseal, etc) is there is deep rust pitting or a quality anti-rust primer if not, and any good brand of paint for the finish.
