Heading south from Colorado in Early September to New Mexico?s Enchanted Circle.  We are avid hikers and road/gravel bicyclists.  Trying to decide where to stay.  Angel Fire or Red River?  We plan on visiting Taos etc.

Eagles Nest is mostly RV parks, and is small about half way between Red River and Angel Fire. Red River is a tourist town and squeezed into a valley so real estate is at a premium so prices are higher. Angel Fire is more up scale than Eagles Nest and has the only real grocery store/fuel point, facilities (laundry, etc) in the valley.  Eagles Nest is near the lake, and is a cross roads with plenty of space for RV parks. The main problem with Eagles Nest is you have to drive to shop. I stay in Eagles Nest and fish, but if you want to hike, rent 4 wheelers, try a lot of restaurants, shop in a variety of stores, etc. go to Red River. Angel fire has good hikes, golf courses, resorts and zip lines, but limited dining, shopping, and attractions.

Roadrunner RV park, Red River. The mayor's children now own it. You won't regret it.  Easy drive to Taos, through Questa. Also nice scenic drive.

Sundance restaurant, in Red River, shouldn't be missed. The honey chilpolte pork tenderloin is to die for, along with, the agave wine frozen margarita.

While there, don't forget to hit up Comanche Creek Brewery.  Interesting place a couple miles off the highway down a almost umarked dirt road.  The guy brews his beer in an old log cabin.

There is a state park near Eagles Nest and we also enjoyed hiking and the scenery in Cimarron Canyon State Park on Hwy 64 between Cimarron and Eagles Nest.

Yep - love Cimarron Canyon - plus if you fish there is quality waters there with some very nice trout.
