2021 Quartzite and KOFA Rallies?
« on: April 21, 2020, 11:55:21 PM »
I know it's really far in the future but DH and I think we might be able to make these events if they happen again in 2021 and all is better next year.  Please keep us in mind so we can plan accordingly.  Optimistically yours.

Unless they shut down travel, we will spend some time in each place. We can certainly manage to be “socially distant” with friends, though potlucks may be out.

We will have a booth in the tent at Quartzsite next January and we’ll do at least 2 two week trips to KOFA.  Been doing the KOFA trips for 25 years. We’ll start notifying everyone of the dates we’ll be there later this year. Everyone will be glad to have you.

Hi Max, Kevin and all,

I highly recommend that people give this area a try as it is truly amazing. Kevin mentioned this on the RV Forum many years back. Was kind to share his experience at KOFA and Quartzsite for others and really knows the ropes. Others make the event a Framily event. My wife and I have been there a couple of times more on our own as our schedual takes us away about the time of the gathering.

This year we are doing things differently and won't be in the area or would attempt to make the gathering. Maybe in the future.

Social distancing and my hearing loss may make it difficult to fully enjoy the company of this great group, but we will definitely be there if possible.  Regarding my hearing problems, I'm hoping Kevin puts his creative hat on and develops an outdoor closed captions doohickey something or other to make sitting 6 feet apart a more enjoyable gathering.  I'm working on my Fire Starter 2.0 which I know Kevin will be looking forward to if I can get it patented in time.

OMG! I just saw your post Gary, and I about peed my pants... again! I'm working hard on a patent for Firestarter 1.0. It's a utility patent, and the claims are that it's an awesome new chemical compound for a fire retardant. After all it was the only thing in the fire pit that wouldn't burn. You'll make millions from the fire fighting industry!  ;D

We were planning to have a booth again this year in the big tent at Q, but we're both uneasy about being cooped up in a tent with thousands of other people. We'll see. We're definitely going to be at KOFA though - at least twice. I don't know the dates yet. It'll depend on whether or not we have a booth at Q.

I'm not concerned about everyone's ability to keep their distance from others at KOFA. Pretty easy to do actually. We sure hope you guys can make it.

Be aware that the north side of Kehune st. in Q is no longer a commercial lot,, from the overpass east to almost the end of the block ending at the north bound st. going to the Chevron service station,,The owner,, for tax reasons has turned the whole acreage into an empty Ag. plot to reduce his tax liability until it sells...  That means Bad Boy's eatery & several other vendors are no longer at the old location,, so either Jolene
will move to another location or shut down for good... If she shuts down I will really miss the world class bisquites and gravy and fairly priced meals that she was known for, in a very clean, comfortable, and well run establishment.>>>Dan

There is another Jolene?  That one can make biscuits?  At first I thought you meant Sweet Darlenes, but she is on Main.  Never got over there for breakfast.  Quartzsite has made a couple changes over the years that seem to be affecting the experience, and not for the better.

We did Quartsite many years ago in our TT. It is time to go again. It is certainly an experience anyone with a RV should have, and I am really looking forward to meeting cool folks from this forum.

I assume the coordinates or general location where forum folks will be making camp will show up here? We certainly want to be in that area. We will be coming from Big River, just across the Colorado from Parker, so not far.

Dumb question here, what is KOFA?

Let's hope they dont have to cancel either if these things. Stay safe!!

BLM has announced the Yuma and Quartzsite LTVAs will be open as usual this winter, except people should bring their own TP and hand sanitizer if they use the porta-potties.

For Quartzsite, it's already here. Check out Jeff's locked post just above this one called "2020 RV Forum Quartzsite Rally." Although that post was for the rally that was held this past January, it'll give you all kinds of information that doesn't change from year to year, including directions, aerial views, etc.

I would guess that the abundance of caution folks may be staying away this time.  The Quartzsite show will have limitations put in place and plans for the big tent.

I am planning on attending this year.

I expect Mike and I, and Ralph, will be at the Rally site in January, probably practicing socially distancing. I doubt we’ll go into the tent, though, too crowded and probably no controls.

I found the controls for the tent.  limit to number inside, wider aisles, one direction etc.  Considering the numbers in Q it may be impossible.

Alas I had hoped to make QZ this year but I'm not sure the virus will be under control by then. Would have been had some things been different I'm sure but they are not different.  2022 it will likely be under control but ....

The insurance declared the damage to  my motor home enough to total it

THus I won't make QZ again because I can't afford to replace it.

This is true for the actual Quartzsite rally in Jan.  For the KOFA gathering, there is no fee, just pull out in the desert and start enjoying it.

Assuming there is an operating federal government not on budget shutdown, there is an office at the entrance where you pay the fee and get a sticker. I have always found them polite and helpful.

We been going to Quartzsite for over 20 years, attending the Western GM rally. For the passed few years (now that we are retiered) we added the Flexable & Bus Conversions International rallies, we will try to come over to see/visit. This will be/is a strange one.

How crazy do people think Kofa will be on New Years’ Eve? We are considering leaving right after Christmas to slip between storm systems, and we would like to spend a week at Kofa beginning NYE. We generally stay far away from popular boondock sites on holidays, but I am not sure if NYE/NYD will be a mess. Anybody have experience with it?

As you pull off the road, there is a small office where the park officials will relieve you of your money. Be advised, they only accept cash and in 2020 it was 40$ for 14 days, which is renewable and includes access to fresh water, dump station and garbage disposal. As you head south on the 95 towards Zuma, look for mile marker 102, turn right into La Posa.

The Quartzsite rally is at La Posa South which is a right turn on 95. The Kofa get together are a left turn off of 95 on King Road 30 miles or so south of Quartzsite.

And Dan, if your comment was addressed to me, I would prefer having nothing to do with party types of possible. Yup, I can pick up and move if it gets rowdy, but I would rather be pro-active and not be there at all if that’s the reputation of the place. I remember someone’s comment about how crowded Thanksgiving weekend was. Crowds aren’t my cup of tea,

I guess I was confused as to where this “office” is and which thing the payment was since I thought the most recent discussion was about Kofa on NYE, not Quartzite?

The office where you pay is located at a small building where you pull off hwy 95 when going to the Quartzsite campsite. Camping at KOFA is free with a maximum stay of two weeks.

Dan, I know Q will be fine. Worried more about Kofa where we would like to spend our first week before going to Q. Oh well, guess we can just roll in and check it out. If it is too full, we will go to Q.

Pam,

We might join you at KOFA for the week if you let me know what you end up doing. I am currently working on reserving something in a campground close to there for a couple nights before New Years Eve to do laundry and take care of tanks after traveling for a few days.

Do you have GPS coordinates for where you usually set up at KOFA? As we have never been there and would be arriving on the 1st ahead of you, not really sure where we are going. I’m sure we can find the general KOFA area, but you probably have a preferred area.

TIA and safe travels.

If you search on Kevin Means name you should be able to find his very good directions. The preferred spot is on the north side of King Road, but it is sometimes already occupied. If so, just find a spot big enough for both of us, and we will look for you. There actually is decent Verizon service at Kofa, much better than at Quartzsite, so you can note where you are on this post.

Hi Vicki. If you go to this discussion area http://www.rvforum.net/SMF_forum/index.php/topic,129660.0.html you'll find the directions to where we normally camp. Just a heads-up though... it's free BLM camping, but you're only allowed to camp in a site for two weeks in a 30 day period, then you have to move at least 30 miles if you want to stay on BLM land. The rangers DO enforce it at KOFA. We've been contacted by them after only a few days - as a friendly reminder.

Just saw this because I've been on the road, so it might be too late.  Try Park Place RV park on Riggles Ave in Quartzsite.  I know they have a lot of empty spots this year(including mine now).

Getting Close!  We are in Benson, and will start heading over mid week.  Want to get oil change on the way, and an overnight probably in Goodyear.  That will get us to Q on or about Thurs Fri time frame.  Anyone there yet?  Any times planned to arrive?

Assume no potluck, but campfires with appropriate distancing should be on.  I'll see if I can get some wood.

Any other musical interests?  I'll have my Dobro along, not ready for prime time, but a little jamming is always fun.

We have a short shopping list for the tent, hopefully can get in there and get out on the swift side.

Will there be any Jeeping?

Hoping yo pop over to Kofa afterwards.

Death Valley is open for day use.  Stay outside the park if the campgrounds are still closed and have the place to yourself.  Longstreet Casino has an RV park just across the Nevada State Line 7 miles north of the Amargosa Opera House.  Pahrump is an hour east of Furnace Creek and has many RV parks including Lakeside Casino.

If anyone is thinking of staying in Pahrump at the Lakeside Casino, be advised. Lovely site, but some of the security staff that patrol the campground must have been trained by the Gestapo. Totally ruined what would have been a wonderful two weeks last year with the most petty excuses. Site rules say no maintenance or vehicle cleaning to be done on site. That means don't even think about wiping over the windshield or checking the washer bottle for water . Trust me, I know from personal experience.
As we are back in the UK, and travel restrictions are in place, we sadly won't be able to join our friends at Q. Stay safe all of you.

Yeah, but I don’t like the long drive into the park from there. We were planning one week or so at Stovepipe Wells and another week or so at Sunset. It is just too big a place to see it all from one spot. It is one of my favorite places, and we missed or normal 2 weeks or so this fall.

Just did a day trip to the "Q" a few days ago. The place is a ghost town compared to the usual crowds. For those of you going to the "Q"  from the east STATE FARM stadium off I 10/101  in Gendale AZ outside Phoenix will become a 24/7 innoculation station starting  MONDaY JANUARY 11 for those 75 and older with a follow up 2 weeks later. As it is a stadium there will be plenty of parking for rigs and then you can go in when the lines are gone  maybe midnight or so

Pam, are you still planning on heading to DV after Q?  We might do that as well.  If so, take a look at the Pads as a possible place to park.  If you're not familiar, it's maybe a half hour from Sunset.

Well, I'm headed back west.  Currently in OKC hitting the road in a couple of hours.
I have a spot reserved in a LaPaz Valley RV park.  One of the couples that works for me in the summer has a winter gig there.  I will definitely swing by the rally site to say "Hi', and keep my eye on the forum for discussion of Jeep trips planned.

Whetstones have arrived.  Dodged most of the rain, windshield wipers on intermittent for about 10 minutes.  Arrive during Happy Hour, set up now, fed drank and toasty.

Quartzsite was a pipe dream from our first finding the forum, and our first forum rally back in CT around 1997?  The Q stories seemed so out of touch from our at the time reality.  Fast forward,  well it was a slow forward, but a fast rewind from now.  This is our 4th?  I think.  2009 was our firsthand that year we spent the whole winter, and only had a chance to visit for a night, 2011, we were wintering at Grand Canyon and got down for a couple days.  2012 saw us wintering at Old Faithful with coach in winter storage, so no go for those years, but 2019 we were able together here, and a fateful year that was.  Ended up buying the Queen from Betty and Terry.  Last winter, FL, and we are now back.

This year with Covid and such, it is a much smaller group.  But it is still Q.
Love this place or hate it, it is uniQue.

Love this place or hate it, it is uniQue.
UniQue indeed. Wish I could make it this year -- hopefully next time.

I bought a little motorhome just to make it back to Q.  Not sure if you could even call it a motorhome.

I will pick it up in two days and will try to make it to Q Friday night.

Renae is driving me over to California Friday morning and I suggested putting bedding and the bare necessities in our car so that we could stay a day or so at Q on the way back and try it out and see old friends.

Funny thing is that this one would almost fit inside my old Stacker.

Nice looking rig Bill. Once an RVer it is hard to keep us still. Hope to see you on Friday.

A unique Q year to  be sure.

No name tags, no schedule, no white board of activities. Pam and Kevin have  provided firewood for  the first few nights and I returned to my motorhome reeking of smoke. I forgot to wear my "old"  clothes to the fire. A most terrible rumor is that there is NO Thrifty ice cream near the big tent. So sad.
I still want to make a quick swing through the big tent just to " see " what is  there. Rain forecast tonight and it is quite cool. Not windy though  like  one year when awnings were a flappin.

What a year. Miss so many!  Happy to see those here! Stay tuned!

Rained a bit during night. Clear today with some iffy clouds in sky.
Visited big tent. 3 main aisles. Posted one way but  50% of population can't figure out arrows. Arrows were not very prevalent or visible. Fewer vendors than in past. They  had large clear shower curtain like  walls between them so a barrier of sorts. Those shoe gel folks and makeup folks are VERY  PUSHY and wanted to sell you something. Most attendees were masked up.

I bought a Euro whipp which is a kitchen gadget I already own . I like it a bunch and bought this one for a gift after my niece watched me use it this summer to scramble eggs. Mostly I bought it to support a vendor.

No thrifty ice cream but there was a soft serve food truck outside doing a fairly good  business. Terry had  corn on a cobb with the works. Hope he liked it enough to be dinner tonight.
Terry is going to lead an easy scenic Jeep run in the morning leaving at 9:30 am. Bring your lunch.

Pulled in to La Paz Valley RV park yesterday.  One of the people who works for me in the summer has a winter gig here.
So nice that I'm out of the cold weather.
Of course I have to go to Parker today(if I want to continue to eat, that is), so I'll miss your Jeep ride, but be sure and post any others.  I need some time in the desert.
