Arrangements of some Welsh songs
« on: November 18, 2020, 08:47:26 PM »
We decided to cancel our visit to the MidWest this winter, so I quit practicing Christmas songs and creating arrangements for teaching extended family to play ukulele and guitar. I switched to creating arrangements of various Welsh classics:

First cut of a well known Welsh hymn - "Rachie", better known by the words of the first line - "i bob un sydd ffyddlon" (English: "to all who are faithful"). Tune by Caradog Roberts, words by Henry Lloyd:

Researching for an arrangement of the rousing 'Men Of Harlech' (Welsh: Gwyr Harlech), I learned that the first publication of the tune was in 1794, and it was believed to have been a folk tune prior to that. The first known words weren't added until c1830, and a bilingual version printed in 1864. I've sung it only in English.

Special lyrics were written for the 1964 movie Zulu, sung/led by Ivor Emanuel.

A traditional (Welsh) rendition by the Treorchy Male Choir while touring Australia:

An interesting rendition by Charlotte Church with the London-Welsh Male Choir:

It's tough to emulate those harmonies while singing solo against a guitar or uke  :(

:)) I grew up hearing the countless Welsh male choirs singing this and other Welsh classics. Also sang many of them in Sunday chapel (mixed male/female voices). But had never heard a female soloist sing that 'march', and she did a great job.

A great job, indeed. Thanks for the links, Tom. Fine music.
