Beach day/dry camp? St pete, Fl

Well, new to camping and i was wondering if there are any "spots" where you can just hang out for the day or overnight near st. pete., fl.  I know the skyway fishing pier is one thing, I am thinking of something close to a causeway or something where you can dip your feet in the water and run your gen. without bugging anyone..
