RV Business magazine reports that April shipments of Class A motorhomes were down a startling 35% from last year. Class B sales were off 25%, while Class C's were down only 1.5%.  Towable RVs and truck campers were off a combined 8.7%, with individual categories ranging from 7-15%.

The only thing startling about Class As being down 35% is that I would have guessed it would be off by about 75%.

Probably why a big local RV dealer has gone from having big Class A's up front by the street for display to having 5ers and TT's up there...

The reporting is from the RVIA, the RV manufacturers industry association, and is done monthly. It should be pretty reliable.  April is a relatively good month, with the season beginning in the north and tailing off in the deep south, where Jan-Feb is the peak.  The cumulative sales for Class A's in 2007 was about 11,800 vs 7700 for 2008. In April 2007 there were 2800 new Class A's shipped from the factories but in April 2008 it was only 1800.

Class B sales were actually up 50% in April 2008 but that represents just 300 vs 200 in April 2007. But on a year to date basis Class B sales are way below 2007 levels.

Thank you for the information. Hope next year is better (for lots of reasons). OTOH, those of us who will be in the used market this winter will be glad to see prices down.

Heard this morning that Winnebago announced that sales for first quarter were off by 70%, cause was  M.H. sales down, and would be down sizing .  I suppose that the high end MH builders will not be off by this much but Wini represents the the core of the industry, low to upper middle class RV buyers.  It is sad

Winnie is in a bad position since they make only motorhomes - no trailers at all. They have been shifting resources towards building Class C's, which have not been hit as hard. Yet.
