We're not sure what we're doing this winter other than either Death Valley or Anza Borrego for Christmas and maybe a Death Valley Rally before or after Quartzite. Mike is insisting that we will NOT be in Colorado this winter (wonder whose turn it is to decide where we go?) But if we're in the area, we'll be there.

Isn't there an old song about "What Are You Doing New Year's"?

Keep us up to date with your DV plans. We want very much to go back soon. Christmas/New Year or a post QZ (not pre) rally works.

Betty, Tubac is always worth a visit.

We bought a beautiful piece of copper "yard art" in Tubac a few years ago. One of the few things that we have in storage.

Summerhaven (top of Mt Lemmon) is also fun to visit. Someday I want to drive the back road to the top of Mt Lemmon - from Oracle, but the road will be close for the winter.

We haven't been to the desert Sonora Museum in many years and will probably make visit this year.

Tom,

If I can unhost a rally two years in a row, anybody can do it.

Actually we will plan a few events, but I will count on Betty to pitch in as usual. Russ hosted the actual new Years party at his coach last year.

Wish we could be there, too, since last year was so much fun, but the lot in Texas is needing our attention for at least this winter.  We have a buddy pad with full hook-ups for anyone who would like to visit us.  There are more pads available with our neighbors or a COE park a few miles away and many things to do in the area (San Antonio, Austin, Fredicksberg, etc).

We've been a little slow at making this year's plans, but we're planning to attend 2008 New Year's at Catalina State Park.  We expect to arrive on Sunday, Dec. 28th.  It sounds like you all had fun in previous years so it's about time we finally joined you.  We'll look forward to seeing everyone.

What about the group area? Anybody know? It says they take reservations for that but maybe it is inappropriate?

Are we doing electric or Quartzsite-dry?

Wendy,

Are there still plans for some sort of Death Valley Rally after Quartzsite? We have never been to DV and are talking about a trip there this year. After Quartzsite might work well for us. Would pre- or post-Quartzsite likely be the best weather?

Lucy,

The group area is nice, but strictly dry camping.

The regular sites (we will be in the "new" area) have 50 amp power and water, but NO reservations. Last year it never filled, but did get down to only a few open sites.

Frank and I are currently at Catalina State Park.  I thought I'd share some info with those who are coming for the rally.  Exits 254 - 258 on I-10 are still closed.  There is still road construction on Oracle Rd.  And the have the barriers right on the white line dividing the lanes from the shoulder.  Very Tight.  The signs for the park are down, due to the construction.

The new Walmart and Best Buy are open.  If your coming down Tangerine Rd, you can turn right into the mall.  Drive through, cross Oracle and right into the park.  But beware.......The have put 10" x 5' speed bumps in. Very Nasty.  ;D ;D ;D

If your coming in after 5:00, the dump station on the road is closed at night. And the pull-thru site have the hook-ups in the back.  We pulled in, disconnected the toad, and than had to back-up.

All the sites in campground B are sat fri, and have 50A with water.  Fire Danger is extremely, extremely High.

Have Fun, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year

Travel Safe and may the road be smooth before ye

Right now our plans are me flying back to FL on 23rd, then Jolene and I driving, leaving on the 26th to come back to QZ.  So, we would be going by on or aound 29th or 30th.  If we can fit t in, it would make a great lat night before getting back to QZ and working.

I mapped it, 10 to 77N, then some east to west roue back to 10.  Is this a good road, or is it better back down 77?  If it is good it only adds a few miles to the trip.

77N is exit 255 off I-10.  It is  CLOSED.  And it takes you through Downtown Tucson.  We took exit 248 Ina Rd East to Oracle/77N. There is nasty road construction on Oracle/77.  Be very careful.

Tangerine Rd exit 240 is a good road. And than go S on Oracle/77, about 1 mile and Left turn into the park.  At the traffic light.
The New Oro Valley Marketplace (where the new Walmart is)  will be on the right (W), and the park in on the left (E).
There are no signs indicating the park entrance.  They have been removed due to the road construction.

Looks like we may have a reunion of the Stonington, CT group at the New Years Rally.  We need a few more.  Come on down Jim Dick and Chet, (I think).  That was so long ago I can't even remember who all were there, but I do remember the park and "some" of the rest of it.  Could it have been the fall of 1995 or 1996 or thereabouts????  I do remember it was a VERY long time ago.  We were on our way to AZ from there, if I recall.  At least I seem to remember it being fall.  Maybe Jim remembers more, since he was the one who organized it....... ;)

I believe it was 97.  Pretty sure, we bought that TC in  the spring that year, and I am sure it was before Jolenes surgery.  (98).  After Jim and I knowing one another from the Cycling forum for probably 7 years or so?  It was our first bike ride, at the RV forum rally.

I believe it was 97.

Bill,

You are correct. I checked my 1997 log book and found that we stayed at Highlands Orchard RV Park in North Stonington, CT from 9/4 to 9/8. I was thinking that it was before 1996 and only look in my log books up to that year. Should have checked 1997. We look forward to seeing you again either at Catalina State Park or Quartzsite or both.

We last saw Rusty and Helen about 4-5 years ago at Ft. Huachuca FamCamp.  We ran into them a couple of winters when we stayed there while they were on a little R&R between assignments with Habitat for Humanity.  I think they were with the FMCA group, but it could have been the SMART group also, I don't quite remember.  Haven't seen them since.  And if I remember correctly, they only had POP email or something similar.  Don't think they could connect to internet readily enough.  They were at Stonington, too,  as I recall.  Didn't we have about 10-12 rigs there?

I'm not aware of any tenure requirements for joining our rallies; Everyone is welcome, subject of course to space. In this case, it's first come first served, because the park doesn't take reservations. Signups are not usually required, but it's always good to let rally hosts, official or otherwise, know you're thinking of coming. Hopefully, Ken will see your message.

Red,

Of course you are welcome. We look forward to meeting you.

My only caution is that Catalina State Park does not take reservations. Last year they did not fill up, but near New Years there were only something like five open sites.

I will post available site information each day. I think that because of the economy there will be fewer people at the park this year.

Ken,

Do you have any idea where the group plans to meet? Linda and I drove up to Catalina State Park this afternoon and Campgrounds A & B were fairly full. Still quite a few spots scatter around but not many in one particular area. The Group Area was empty but doesn't look like there are any actual camping spots.

See everyone the 28th or 29th.

Richard,

I called Catalina State park today. The person on the phone asked the Ranger and he only said they were not close to full this morning. What that really means I have no idea as I was not talking directly to him.

I will call back the day before Chrismas and check on the status.

Last year we were on the south side of the B campground.

Looking back to last year, when we arrived the south side was maybe half full, with fewer people on the north side. The A campground was closed last year.

Ken,

I agree neither Campground A nor B were close to being full. However, there probably were not more than two or three areas where there was more than three sites together which were empty. The empty sites were fairly evenly scatter around both A & B. Since there is a two week limit on stays, who knows what the status will be towards the end of the month. The ranger told us they do not start filling up until after the first of the year. We will watch for your postings as to the area where we will stay this year.

Richard,

Thanks for the info. Last year we were strung out along the outer two roads on the south side. This year will depend on where we can get the most site close together.

Thanks Ken. We had to miss last year (Linda's father) and the year before (new granddaughter) and I didn't know where the group was located. Let's hope that we can all get reasonably close together.

Unfortunately, we will have to miss this year's unofficial rally but at least year's, we were parked at one end of the group with a lot of "outsider" rigs in between. It wasn't that far or difficult to walk to the other end of where we were strung out.

Coincidently me and my girlfriend were planning on staying at Catalina from the 2nd to the 12th of January. So sign us up. We have never been to a rally and we have no idea what to expect. Three legged sack races? Snipe hunts? Catching grunion? Scavenger hunts? Poetry reading? Talent shows? Drunken brawls? Someone streaking the campground? Just what goes on at these rallies? Inquiring minds want to know.

All,

We are at Catalina State Park (12/26/08 at 1:30) along with Judy & Ollie and Russ M. (2000 Monaco Windsor, and two Magnas)

WARNING, the sign on Oracle road for the turn in to the Park are DOWN.

There is now a stop light at the turn.  First stop light south of Tangerine. On the West side is the entrance to a new mall

We are in Campground B, south side The side you drive through first).

There are about 5 sites on the south side of campground B. After parking I checked out the north side and it has around 15 sites. The ranger said there are also sites (WE) in campground A.

It is currently 42 degrees with a little mist.

Tom and BJ,

Sheila and I will be leaving on the 2nd, but I believe some of the other may be staying a day or two longer.

This is an unorganized get together. A meeting of friends old and new.
Yesterday the three early arriving coaches went to a late lunch at sweet Tomatoes Restaurant. As it warms up in the coming days we will have afternoon get togethers between a couple of the coaches. Other than that it will be done as the group decides.

Hope to meet you before we leave.

Saturday morning.

When we awoke this morning it was 22 degrees (5 am). Now at 8:30 it is up to 29 degrees.
Today should be sunny, but only in the mid fifties. Tonight it will be cold again.
Tomorrow should be in the sixties and the night should be a little warmer.

At this time there are 6 sites ( including the site next to yours) open on the south side of campground B and 8 sites on the North side. I have not checked out campground A. I am sure a few will leave today, but then more will arrive.

Progress.  Tonight in Vinton, LA.  Just short of TX.  Heavy rain caused us to forego the run into Beaumont.  Rain has stopped, temp has dropped, but still OK.  Tomorrow night TX, maybe the next as well?  Most likely NM Mon.  AZ Tue & Wed.  See you soon.

We  arrived at Catalina State Park around 4 pm 12/27/08.  This was  a full 2.5 hours behind our anticipated arrival.  We left Deming, New Mexico this morning around 9:30 am. and traveled  west on  Interstate 10.  About 1/2 hour into our day's journey the traffic slowed with Border Patrol cars signaling traffic to slow down.  Sure enough, just ahead our lane of traffic stopped.  I am certain ice was a factor in the accident as the temperature at the time of slow down was 24.
A quick switch to  Channel 19 on CB informed us that a huge traffic  accident had occured about 7 miles in front of us.  Helicopetrs were  in the road air lifting  critically  injured to Silver City. We wer told via cb radio that we awaited arrival of coroner.

Meanwhile in our motorhome, we shut down the engine, started the generator , watched a movie, had lunch , phoned family and were generally quite comfortable.  By the time traffic resumed and we crossed the accident site , we were  not able to  know the details of the accident.  I can only thank god we are so  blessed  to have  the comforts of our rig and our lifestyle and that our time was not up today.

This voyage will make our unofficial rally here even  more sweet as we relish our friends, our safety  and our lifestyle!

Happy New Year.

Re-calc.  Tomorrow shorter day, overnight at San antonio.  maybe a motorcycle trip into the city.  Then Van Horn for a night, Then to Catalina.  Should be there Tues, after noon sometime.

Make for a little easier driving days.  450 miles vs 500+++ a day.

The FitzGeralds also arrived this evening.  Unlike the Brewers, our biggest delay was at the Flying J where all but three fuel lines were shut down for some unknown reason.  Inside they also were having problems with their receipt printers so everyone was trying to fix that problem and waits for purchases were lengthy.  We had made good time until then and decided to keep going thinking we would still arrive at Catalina in daylight.  NOT!  Just as we left I-10 on Tangerine the sun was setting and it was mostly dark on Tangerine.  This is a good two-lane road, max. 50 mph, and with many dips at 35 mph.  It's well-traveled and a good route from the west.  Tangerine deadends at Oracle.  Our GPS said to turn left onto Oracle, which is wrong.  There is a small sign at the Oracle intersection that says Catalina SP is to the right.  You turn right and go about one mile to the first taffiic light.  On the right is a big shopping center (something Marketplace) and you turn left at that light onto an unmarked road.  Once you make the turn you see the entrance sign that says Catalina State Park.  When we got to the ranger station he was just closing up but gave Jerry a map so we could find campground B.  Boy, it was a dark drive in but we immediately saw Russ' coach and Ken came out to guide us around and into a pull-though site.  It was for us a long day but we're glad we're once again among our framily!

Happy New Year everyone!

This afternoon most of us went to the movies and then we all meet for dinner at Olive Garden. We had 13 for dinner. Unfortunately I fell down in my duties and did not bring a camera and neither did Betty. (I never have bothered to figure out how to down photos from the cell phone).

Anyway I think everyone had a good time. At least I know that our end of the table had good service and good food.

When ArdraF and JerryF arrived last night all of us were in Ken and Sheila's coach chatting. Outside was pitch black. Sitting on the sofa, I could see a figure, faintly backlit, walking up towards us. JerryF's gait is so distinctive that I instantly recognized him and jumped up to welcome their arrival.

26 outside here in Kerrville.  Coffee just finished, having a nice breakfast and on the road by 8 or so.  Maybe it will bump to about 34 by then.

This afternoon we had a gathering outside. It was sunny and in the 70's.

While we were together Don and Peg arrived. It was good to see them again.

Marie and Chuck also joined us for the afternoon.

Bill and Jolene; Red and Dim and anyone planning to attend.

This morning there are two sites on the south side of CG B, 4 on the Northside of B and 8 (WE) sites in CG A (A also has dry camp sites)

More sites will open up as people leave this morning, but fill again in the afternoon and evening.

Bill,

Terry and Betty & Linda and I are the only ones left in the campground. The rest have left for dinner and we are leaving at 5:30. I can not see any pull thoughs in Campground B where we are located. There is a back in spot right across the street next to the restrooms which is essentially with our group. That is probably your best bet until some leaves tomorrow. It has W&E.

I tried calling you but the number is a non-working number.

Pictured here are some of the activites of this very low key un-official rally.  Can you guess how many computers will work in one motorhome?  It is a beautiful day and  Jerry and I just did as short hike up to the Romero Ruins.  Happy hour is at  3pm with a Potluck to follow.  Russ is hosting us in his rig this evening to celebrate the New Year 2009!

Sun is setting, pot luck is done and cleaned up, we are all getting changed into formal wear for Russ's party.  Debating between my desert gold, or the festive plaid bow tie for my tuxedo.

Here are some of the feeding frenzy pictures.

Update.  Guess I ate too much at Pot Luck, can't get into my tux.  Guess it will be jeans and flannel.

The New Year's eve ball dropping party at Mahoney's coach was a success, but with only 3 of the 12 bottles of champagne consumed!

14 is a tight squeeze but we were all fairly comfortable. NBC supplied the TV feed and I showed pics from the Maritimes trip.

Wendy I will try but make no guarantees on spellings.

1. Peg and Don Miller      Camp Verde, AZ
2. Ardra and Jerry Fitzgerald  Las Vagas NV
3.  Ken and Shiela Kuch      Phoenix area full timers still working
4. Russ Mahoney              Surprise AZ Happy Trails and Iowa
5.  Ollie and Judy ( Some very Portuguese last name I can't recall)  Fulltimers in Surprise and Idaho too
6. Richard and Linda Sharp   Rochester NY but they  winter in Tucson
7. Jolene and Bill Whetstone  (Pancake Bill) from Florida but working at Quartzsite for an RV dealer a  bit in winter
8.  John Wall and wife Mary-Wales North (or MW for short)  RV wanna bees, House in Tucson just on market.
9. Betty and Terry Brewer   House in Yuma and cabin in Idaho
10 Sheila and Ken  unhosts of the rally in Russ' coach at 11:59:46 on 12/31/08.

Sure looks like we missed a great party! I'm happy you had power. That way Russ didn't have to ask anyone to shut down the generator as the ball dropped!!! ;D ;D

Economy!! We would love to head west but won't know if we can until we see what happens this year. Work was very spotty this summer which doesn't help. I hope we can do it soon.

Russ,

Thanks for hosting the New Years Eve gathering again this year.

How long have you been doing this? I know that you did it the previous year at the first Catalina SP New years Rally and I was at one several years ago at Alamo SP, but I seem to remember more before these rallies.

It's just amazing how many people you can fit in a motorhome.

So, where's the 2009-2010 New Year's Unofficial Rally going to be???

Wendy,

Unless somebody can come up with a more scenic location that also has close access to shopping, restaurants and even movies, I am planning on holding a rally for 09/10 at Catalina SP. Probably after three years we will look for someplace new. But then, I don't know if I'll even be in AZ for 10/11.

I'm not sure exactly when the champagne new years eve party in my coach started.
2000 was at Quartzsite. Pete harpin positioned his rig to block the bitterly cold wind for our outdoor start of the evening party with 22 people. I suspect many of us moved into my rig and finished the party there! That is likely the start of the tradition. Thomases, Reiters, Van Luchenes, Kuchs, Brewers, Ruwards, Biningers(and 2 friends), Millers, and my sister & BIL.
Some of us went on to Alamo lake on Jan 2, 2001.

2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 were at Alamo lake
2005 at lake Pleasant
2007, 2008 Catalina SP

2006 signaled the decline in wine consumption. I vaguely remember only using up 6 bottles.
2007= 2 bottles
2008= 3 bottles
