Hello everyone. My name is Toni and my other half is Barry. We're currently looking to buy an RV in the UK and after lots of research and 'surfing' we have decided that a 30ft- 32ft, A class seems to be the best option for us. The floor plan we prefer has a 4 seater dinette opposite the kitchen. Based upon current prices our budget will probably buy us one manufactured in the mid 1990s.

I have seen an RV for sale, which has a slide out, but I need some advise because it's the kitchen and sofa that are in the slide out and I am concerned about the gas and waste pipes etc., constantly moving in and out. Is this a valid concern? Most of the RVs with slide outs I have viewed on-line have the dinette and sofa in the slide out. This RV also has a tear in the slide out topper/awning, how and where can I get this fixed?

If anyone has any advice on what we should be checking for when we view an RV and whether or not an LPG conversion on a petrol RV is adviseable, it would be a great help. With regards to an LPG conversion, someone told me that LPG can burn the valves out on the engine, not a good thing I would have thought!!

We live in Norfolk and would be prepared to travel a maximum of 150 miles to view a vehicle, so if anyone knows of one for sale please let me know.

Hi Toni

Can I ask how much you wish to spend (roughly) ?

That would give people an idea of what is available to you.

Personally, I wouldnt buy an RV in the UK which required a topper repair - especially if its an older RV. Firstly you will need to find a replacement (there are companies in the UK who can get one at a price) ... BUT ... the colour is likely to be faded on the existing toppers and the new one will stand out a bit.

There are plenty of good quality RVs for sale in the UK at present, at very good prices. Depending on budget, you could also buy one from the US.

Our budget is about ?15000.00.

We had thought of petrol rather than diesel because of the LPG option but we need to know the pros and cons of running on LPG.

With regards to the RV with a damaged slide out topper, the rip is front to back only a few inches in from the edge. I was wondering if it could be repaired, maybe with some specialist tape?

We don't wish to import an RV for various reasons, although the process does not concern us (we have imported 2 cars in the past.) I would prefer to view an RV in person so that I can get a feel of it; it's like buying a house, you have to know that you can live in it!

Anyway, we will keep searching.

Slides with the galley appliances are quite common and the water and gas lines are generally not a concern. Of course, it is one more thing that can possibly break or wear, but as I said, it is not something that is more likely to fail than any other single thing.

Fixing the topper would be a stop-gap affair. A tear such as you describe is a common thing on A&E brand toppers and it will eventually spread. Gluing and/or taping it will slow that spread but won't stop it forever. You can order replacement fabric or simply replace the whole thing. You would have to order form the US, though, and that might require an agent willing to handle the buy & ship for you.
