2008 SE Rally Times
« on: October 24, 2008, 11:05:02 AM »
6 rigs showed up early for the 2008 Fall edition of the Southeast RV Forum Rally. Already onsite and having fun are the Brincks, Dicks, Nesbits, Malones, Reiters, & Reavis's.  Everybody gathered in the Brinck's coach for happy hour yesterday. More folks are expected today.

Bad weather blew in late last night and it has rained hard and steady since. It is supposed to clear on Saturday, though. The park has a clubhouse and covered pavilion, so we have a place for tonight's dinner and the preceding social hour(s). Nancy already has spaghetti sauce brewing for the dinner and we will have fun regardless of whether. It's the people, not the place that makes the fun!

The spaghetti dinner was excellent thanks to Gary and Nancy.  The rest of us brought snacks, salads, bread, deserts, and wine to go with the main course.  Everyone had a great time even though the weather wasn't the greatest outside.  I have added a few pictures of Happy Hour.

Great pic's Lorna.   How about a few shots of the other folks there so we (who don't know folks well enough to put names with faces) can do just that.  Looks like I've missed a great opportunity to meet and enjoy some nice folks.  Thanks for your time and efforts.  lou

It was a great kickoff dinner.  Thanks, Gary & Nancy, for hosting and cooking!

Being our first time at a rally, it was good to put faces to names that we've known for 2+ years.

If anyone is going to the train thing or the sub museum, please let me know -- I'd be interested in either/both.

More folks arrived Friday (just in time for dinner - who says there is no free lunch?). Friday arrivals include the Cousins, Landers, Weimarts and Arthurs. We are now 10 rigs strong. Joel & Camille Myers are expected Sunday.

Frank,

Yes there will be a group going over to the train yard on Monday.

Here are a few more pictures from tonight's potluck and yes we do eat good.  The first picture is of the three missing people from last night.  Our group was a bit segregated for Happy Hour today ::)  The rain seems to have left and hopefully by tomorrow we won't be below sea level :(   Some of us went to St. Marys today to visit a Submarine Museum (sorry no pictures unless someone else took some).

Tom

Thanks.

Me too, Cliff,  This is the third SE rally in a row that I thought I had a real chance to attend and it seems something always comes up to prevent/preempt it.  Maybe in the Spring.  We'll see.

The ladies toured the sights of St Mary's this afternoon while the guys did various projects of just chatted. Guys started gathering for socials around 4-ish and the gals came back form their expeditions (nobody lost this time!) around 5 or so.

Tonight we had an impromptu cook-out of hot dogs and bratwurst, followed by Mexican Train dominoes in the clubhouse and a campfire (gas log variety) at the Brinck's site. The campfire was accompanied by coffee sweetened with your choice of Bailey's Irish Creme or Godiva Chocolate.

My photos will share with you the  Orange Hall, an 1879 Anti Bellum home in St Mary's that many of the women of the rally toured today.  We will also  feature the Scarecrow contest  enteries of the businesses  in town.  We will see Scare crow campers.  We will feature the  three boys who can light a bar b que . We will end with the featured couple of the evening, Joel and Camille who arrived today.

Eggs in a bag in the morning!  Don't you just wish you were here?  I paid  $2.14 for  regular gas  this afternoon.  Whoooo hooooo.

Today a group of Rallyees went over to Folkston, Ga. to watch trains go through the Folkston Funnel.  Nearly all of the CSX trains from the north or the south have to go through Folkston resulting in a an average of 60 trains passing through the town every day.

Someone else will no doubt post pictures of the avid trainwatchers.

The attached pictures were taken from an overpass just north of Folkston and show the two major northern system tracks approaching Folkston north of the overpass and merging just south of the overpass and passing through town.

If you are interested there's more information here: http://www.folkston.com/trains/trains.htm

Hard to believe that our happy sojourn is drawing to a close.  It has been a great rally!

Beat wishes to all for safe travels and thanks for all the help you've given these semi-newbies.

The whole gang went out to dinner tonight at Starters, a local bar & grill.  We had a fun time (at least at our table of 8) and good chow. Were going to have a campfire when we returned, but the temps were already low 50's and enthusiasm for sitting outside was lacking.  Maybe tomorrow night for those few who are left.

Jeff has volunteered to do the "omelet in a bag" breakfast again Tuesday morning, using  the leftover ingredients from this a.m.

Monday October 24, 2008,

Jeff Cousins led the breakfast brigade with his omlettes in a bag.   He and wife Sue prepared the eggs and  we filled our ziplock freezer bags with the goodies we like inside omlettes.  Jeff doused them into boiling water for a time and voila  beautifully tasty eggs.  Everyone else provided lots of food.  Bsquits and gravy, English muffins, fruit rounded out our treats.  We had enough for left over the next day.

Tha final photo is  a memory of the King George RV Resort who had a sewer problem and the front row did not have sewer for the week.  The back row and those closest had an  aromoa to remind them there was a problem.

Photos of last nights dinner to follow.

Here is a photo gallery of the Forum friends who attended the Southeast RV Forum Rally in Woodbine GA  in October of 2008.

I won't even try to get the names right,  as you can see we are NOT wearing our name badges.  The girls in the first 2 photos are having something blue to drink.  It had the name Lagoon in it.  They had two of them each , can you tell?

This group dinner was lively and fun and Starters was the name of the restaurnat with lots of menu choices.

Betty
Glad to have attended my first SE Forum Rally.

For all those fellow rallyites  who wished us well on our trip home today -- and those who questioned our sanity -- we made it safely, arriving in the Raleigh area just in time to participate in the local version of rush hour.

448 miles!  Longer than we thought.  Did someone say "windy"?  Yes, spent all day working at keeping the moho from moving east with the quartering NW wind.  Best part of the day was getting 72 gallons of fuel at the Latta, SC Flying J at $3.14/gal.  With our 1 cent/gallon FJ reward discount and the 3% discount from American Express, we got as close to $3/gallon as we have been in a LONG time!

To top off the day, after unloading the moho into the stick house and driving it out to the place where we keep it and backing it into the garage in the dark then driving back to Cary, when we stopped for a bite at Bojangles, I discovered I'd left my wallet in the moho!

Mary Ann was very nice to me during the 30 mile roundtrip to retrieve my wallet.  Much nicer than I deserved!

Once again, thanks to Gary and Nancy for hosting another wonderful SE Rally!  Special thanks, too, to Jeff and Sue for cheerfully turning out breakfast omelets 2, count'em, 2 days in a row!  And thanks to all the other friends old and new who pitched in to make the rally a fun success.

Bless you all.  Until next time.....

Glad to hear you had a safe, if long, trip home, Don.  It was a good rally, as usual.

We followed Jim and Pat Dick down to TGO and are now parked in sunny FL with the heat pump running :)  The Palleys stopped by just before we went out for hot dogs last night, so we finally got to meet them after all these years.

We've had unusually poor weather for the Southeast rallies this year.  A monsoon at the spring rally and now heavy rain and flooding in the fall followed by a cold snap (34 degrees this morning). Yet through it all folks laughed and enjoyed themselves. Fortunately we had shelters at both locations.

We are departing for our Florida home base this morning and I think most of the remaining attendees will also leave today. Joel & Camille Myers will remain, holding the fort.

Judy and Wayne have arrived safely at Lakeland Carefree RV Resort for the district FCRV  rally.

Our thanks to Gary and Nancy for another great SE rally. We will be looking for an even greater rally next year.
Thanks to Jeff for the great omelets in a bag.

We really enjoyed old friends and meeting all of the new attendees who are now old friends. Old certainly not referring to anyone's age :D.

Thanks again to all.

We are spending one last night at King George before heading to south Florida in the morning. The photo is from Sunday night; tonight there are only two blue lights in the park!

Thanks Gary and Nancy, we had a great time and loved seeing everyone again or meeting new friends.

Until next year!

We would also like to thank Gary & Nancy for hosting the rally and Jeff & Sue for providing the great omlettes. We arrived home in the early afternoon. The drive was uneventful and it was good to be on concrete again!!!

We thought we'd be here until Christmas but a message from our son now has us leaving tomorrow, without the coach, for Virginia. His promotion to Navy Captain has been changed from early spring to Monday!!!! At frist we thought we should skip it but have decided it's too important to miss even though it will be a low key ceremony. We will probably return on Tuesday.

Jim,

Congratulations to the "Captain".  I've known a few through work, mostly submariners, and they were all great guys as were the full colonels in the AF.  Must be something about the winowing process in the service!  BG

Please add our congratulations to those for Captain Jimmy.  Congrats to Regina and the kids, too.  When a man attains a rank that high, I'm sure the family also serves in a million large and small ways.

Hope you proud parents have a safe trip to the ceremony.

We too had a blissfully uneventful trip to our home base. We are parked in the yard of the house but still living in the coach, since our daughter hasn't moved out yet.  Maybe by early next week we will really be "home"???.

I can't evict her yet, cause we are supplying the mattress for her new place.  We have a new air-type mattress on order for the coach and will donate the previous conventional one to the new apartment. But the new one hasn't arrived yet...

Thanks Dave.

We fueled up in St. Marys this morning with regular gas at $2.049. In North Carolina it is $2.479+!! Sure glad I'm not driving the coach! It sure was nice to get home and we had Ned & Lorna next door. They invited us for a spaghetti dinner last night and left right after us this morning. Wish we had more time to visit. We also visited with Steve & Ginette earlier in the evening. We will finally "get home" either late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Hope we can stay put until Christmas. ;D

Here are pics of two of the side trips last week.  The first group got restless when no sub showed up in St. Marys after a couple of hours.  The second group had better luck at the Folkston Funnel -- 5 trains in one hour!

I visit this forum many times each day.  Not only is it a pleasure, but I pick-up a lot of tips that are useful.  I feel like I am getting to know some of the regulars and am anxious to meet in person.  I watch the posting for rallys, but it seems we are always a few states away, in the wrong direction to attend.  I sure look forward to meeting up one of these days.

BTW Jeff:  What's up with the blue lights you featured in the picture?

Geodrake,

Where are  you located?  Sometimes you only have to tell folks where you are and a "mini rally" develops.  Do keep joining in the converstions cause one day paths will cross.  About the lights....They are  lovingly referred to as "Blue light specials."  The Motosat dish lights up allowing all of us  to keep in touch via satellite. I love the technology.  So much better than the historical acoustic phone couplers of the "olden" days.

What Betty said.

We were reminiscing at the SE Fall Rally about the 1st SE Rally.  Two couples agreed to meet, announced time & place.  At least 6 rigs showed up and the SE Rallys began.

What Betty and Joel said is about the way the QZ rallies started.  Fred & I decided to stay on the desert for one season.  Happened to mention that we were there on the forum and what we were doing and seeing.  Margi & Tom came for a few days in Nov., I think, and we told the others about what we were doing and the fun we were having.  A few others came and went and then at "showtime" in Jan. a few more came and stayed longer.  Each year the same thing happened, for longer periods of times.  Not just a day or two,  a week or more.  It just sort of exploded from there.  Many lives were changed in those first years!  That desert sure has some allure......

There certainly were no plans laid out ahead of time.  Things just sort of fell together with each person attending adding to the enjoyment of everyone else.  What a great time it was and is still being had by all who attend.

We are in a travel mode currently, making the rounds thru Illinois and Indiana visiting relatives.  Just a few days in each place.  Then we will return home (KC) till after Christmas.

We are volunteering at Patagonia, AZ Jan, Feb, and March.  I note that the Quartzside Rally is just two weeks after we get there.  I doubt that we will make it for the show/rally but perhaps later.  Will there still be Forum folks around, or do most leave after the show?

George,

Historicallly several have stayed long beyond the  "end" of the rally.  Sometimes that is the best time.  Fewer crowds, you can get closer to the campfire and have the desert diehards to visit with.  The activities are usually posted daily so keep tuning in.

Daisy.  Not sure if I remember when you started the desert thing, but I remember the first Rally we met you, down in CT, the talk of it.  It amazed us because we had never heard such a thing, and then following the talk of the Christmas Framily dnner at the cafe, the 4wd excursions, gem huntng etc.  It got put on our list for times to come for sure.

Hi Bill,

Biil said: It amazed us because we had never heard such a thing, and then following the talk of the Christmas Framily dnner at the cafe, the 4wd excursions, gem huntng etc.

Coming from the east, it amazed us too!  It was such a different experience, something the NE can't even imagine.  We really did and still do enjoy it.  It made just a profound impression on us, that as you know, we have left New England behind us, and have our roots in the desert now, although a little higher ground than QZ.  Absolutely love it.....

I'm thinking our first desert event was probably the winter of 95/96, or the following year.  The first one ever was the winter of 94/95 in our then brand new Bounder MH.   Had to buy a new one as the old junker we used to get down there was pulling down the real estate value.  We were then parked at Hasslers RV Pk, and had the only phone connection.  Wires were going all over that cg.

I, too, remember meeting you at the CT rally and what a good time that was as well.  I was always sorry we didn't have a chance to see you again on our numerous trips back east.  Hopefully,  you'll be able to get out here and experience ail this personally VERY soon.

There was another rally in CT which we organized and was held near Mystic, CT Can't remember just which year it was. It was before my digital camera days so any photos I might have are stored somewhere between FL and CT. :)

Jim,

The CT rally is the one that I referenced above, North Stonington, CT from 9/4/97 to 9/8/97. Mystic is relatively close to Stonington and I do remember the name. In fact, I think we went there one evening or afternoon to eat and sightsee. The dates were taken from my log book, which I have no reason to doubt. Relying on my memory is somewhat more dubious.

Richard

Edit:
Between the time I started replying to Jim's message, it looks like the thread has been split up and my reference to the post above not longer is valid. Perhaps this message should be moved to the thread which was split off.  Richard

Happy New Year to all our 2008 SE Rally friends.

This greeting is late because of all the Christmas - New Years - family visits, cleaning, decorating, shopping, returning, celebrating, enjoying, and related activities we've been engaged in since before Thanksgiving.  Also, because the longer I'm retired and the less I have to do the more behinder I get.

Really wanted to let all of you who sympathized and empathized with Mary Ann about her shoulder injury from the hiking fall in Yellowstone (June, but she was still in rehab at Rally time) and her hip injury from the fall from the ladder as she was helping clean the coach for the trip to the SE Rally, that she is fully recovered from both and we're both doing well.  The interesting thing, to us, was that the right hip pain that was causing the limp at the Rally eventually turned into a left hip pain/limp, then, after some therapy, went away.

As to our travels, our longest coach trip has been from Pittsboro, NC, the moho's winter home, to Siler City, NC, about 30 miles west on RT 64, and return, for the monthly "exercise the coach" trip.  As usually, we ran the generator with the heat pumps on for a load but this time we had to run the dash air conditioning to keep the driver and Navigator from over heating......probably was a good idea to exercise the AC anyway.

I've been keeping up with you all by lurking the site.  As soon as I send this, I'm headed to the other end of the house to get on Mary Ann's PC and set up an account on the Forum for her to use.  Hopefully she'll become a more active visitor.

We're currently planning to just hang around here (Cary, NC) until about April, then hit the road again -- so far, destination unknown.

If there is a more correct place to post a communication like this, or a better way to communicate with a specific group of Forum members, please let me know.

Until we meet again, all good things to you.

One of the stops you should be planning is the 2009 Southeast Spring Rally. I haven't figured out just where or when, but Nancy & I will be in Texarakana May 18-23 for an American Coach rally and are thinking to have the SE Spring rally in that general area sometime in May.

Marlene & I had a great time at the SE spring rally and would love to attend the 2009 rally if we have the right geographic/time setup. We will be traveling to Perry, GA and back home in mid-March for the FMCA International Convention. We then head back out for meetings in Cincinnati the first full week of May. Anything on the way to either or back from Perry would be great. Just a hope ;D

Could be anywhere in the very late April to end of May time frame, Bernie.  I've got too much on my plate right now to work it any closer than that, but will get to it soon.

Gary,

We will be at the lot until the end of April.  Potters Creek COE park is about eight miles from our lot and there is much to do in the area within an hours drive.  The COE park is on Canyon Lake and is very nice.  We were here in April last year and the weather was good.  Think about it when you have time.  We would love to do the SE Rally again.
