Neat map. Please change the Oro Valley, UT to AZ. It is just north of Tucson. Could you add dates to the pushpins?

Tom,

I like the map!  Neat addition!  One other idea is to add a button "RV Forum Rallies" so we can go to it directly.  Kind of an across-the-board sort of thing that everyone can use.

Thanks Ardra. If the map stays, I'll add a link in the menu. It's experimental right now, although I suspect it will be a keeper.

Edit: Thanks to the positive responses, the map is a keeper, and I've added a link in the menu; Click the Resources button above and scroll down to see the link.

Thanks Ned.  I just couldn't find any link and this thread had obviously been broken off of another, that I had missed somewhere along the way.

Tom:  Fred and I hosted a forum pre-rally for the big FMCA rally in Maine in the year 2000 (I think).  Our pre-rally was in Westbrook, ME, don't have the coordinates, but just outside of Portland, ME.  The FMCA was held at Brunswick NAS

Daisy,

Is this  the same rally that's labeled in our rally photo albums as the "NE rally in Portland, ME in 2000" (you and Fred are pictured at that rally), or were they separate rallies? Anyone recall the park or campground where this rally was held?

I've added this rally to the map with a temporary note saying it's an approximate location.

FWIW all reported changes/updates have been made, although there are still one or two unknowns. I also need to research a couple of the older rallies not yet on the map. Y'all feel free to report any errors or omissions.

I really liked the map when I saw it earlier today.  Right now I can get the map, but not the push pins.  Probably a problem on my end, as our HughesNet shows a good connection at 54 mbps, but is agonizingly slow even so.

An idea:  would it be unnecessarily complicated to show the past rallies as one color push pin and upcoming rallies in another color?

Margi, I've read numerous messages on the Google forum complaining about a similar thing. The "best" answers people were given were to refresh/reload the page, empty cache, restart the browser, or any combination of the above. I think it's just that the images (pins) aren't downloading, which might be just an intermittent speed issue, somewhere between you and Google. Could even be an issue with their server, given the number of folks I saw complaining.

That's a great idea Margi, thanks. Definitely one of those "HFWPOH why didn't I think of that?" ideas. I've changed the pins for past rallies to red and left the others blue. The "gray area" is those locations that are common to past and future rallies (e.g. QZ); I've left those as blue pins. I've added a note at the top of the page explaining the colors.

I can provide the locations and approximate lat/lon for past SE rallys, but question whether they are of enough interest to bother. We've had SE rallys in two different locations each year for 11 years with only two repeat locations that I can think of, so that's a lot of pushpins.

Your choice Gary. Personally, I think it would be useful/informative when folks talk about rally or mini rally locations (past or future), but don't wish to put you to a lot of work. Adding the pins is a piece of cake once I know the park/city/state or GPS location, whichever is easier to provide. The US map is quite large, so some additional pins are unlikely to be an issue.

The challenge for many seems to be recalling where they were in a given year. I usually can't recall where I went yesterday  :(

That is the same rally as the pictures you have.  It was held at Wassumpski Springs Campground.  Fred reminded me the address is actually Scarborough, ME, but it is right on the Scarborough, Westbrook, Portland line, so I get confused easily.  I think it actually lies ion Westbrook land, but the Post Office likes Scarborough better...... ;D

Bob:

We were there at that mud rally of FMCA at Perry.  Fred says we had the Bounder, so had to be after Dec. of 1994, when we bought the Bounder, and prior to the fall of 1997, when we got the Dutch Star.  Our logs are out in th MH and we may get down there later today, so we'll try to remember to bring them back.

That was really a mess, but we saw some really hilarious and some really DUMB stunts people were doing to get "unstuck".......

There was a pre-rally of forum members at Highland ??? Campground.  Joel & Camilla were there, Sarah & "Elliot", George & Joanna Jannini and us and I can't remember the others right now, but I know there were several others.  That was the old Compuserve Forum members then, and some of them are no longer around or at least I haven't seen them here.  That was a really long time ago..... ;D

I also need to peruse the gallery to see what rally photos I need to add.

Ken Kuch if you're reading this???

When was the pre-FMCA Rally at Essex Juction, VT.  Fred and I remember that was probably the first time we met you.  And Sheila was looking for a good used Blue Bird...... :D

We met either at that one or the one Joel and Camilla hosted at the other end of VT., the name of which escapes me now.  The one Joel hosted was a mini-rally, because Joel and Camille were going to be there and wondered who else might come???  You two, the Dicks, Jannini's and Myers and us were there.  Who else?  Don't remember that year either.

I've got swatches of memories, but no times to go with them.  Is that a sign of old age or what? ??? ::)

Daisy,

I know our first FMCA event was the NE Area Rally in Fryburg, ME in July, 1994 ( a week or two after we picked up our first MH) We met one other Forum member at this rally, but I don't remember his name (Mac?)

I believe the first NE Rally in Essex Junction was in July or August 1995. She and I were there with the Green MT Chapter as hosts of that rally. I believe that is the time we met you and Fred.

Later we had the Stonington Rally (which you and Fred organized)
Then we had Joel's mini rally at Dorset rally (south west VT)
And the last NE rally that we attended was the Highland Games Rally in Westfield, MA. The organizers of the Highland games gave us our own private rally site by the river - but it sure was HOT. (petty sure this was August  1999)

The first quasi forum event we attended was a dinner at the 1994 Harrisburg, Pennsylvania RV show. At the dinner was Gary Lee, Joe Lacy and a member form NJ who I can't remember (Ron P ?).

Yeap - we scouted Moab campgrounds a few months after the 1999 Centermost rally (Estes Park) and emailed our findings to Barbara Barberra. I believe it was Barbara who subsequently picked Portal for the following years "Centermost", except that everybody just called it the "Moab Rally". The ironic thing is that we couldn't get back there for the first official Moab rally.

Tom,

Sorry I wasn't clear. This was an FMCA area rally held at Essex Junction VT. The host chapter was the Green Mountain Chap of which we were members. The forum had a group at the rally which included Fred & Daisy and Pat & Jim Dick and I believe one other couple.

Tom,
The data associated with the Moab Hop-Skip-Jump rally has an error.  The data that comes up when the map pegs are mouse clicked is the same for both the first two pegs.  It is the data for the Hop, there isn't any data for the Skip.  Otherwise it looks like a good addition to the Forum.

Hi Dean, and thanks for the feedback.

Because the pins close together, the 'Skip' pin appears to have the 'hop' data, although in fact they each have the correct respective data. Try zooming in a notch so the pins don't overlap, and then click on them.

The Southeast US area of the map is going to get really crowded when all the SE rallies are plotted.  There will be lots of overlap unless you zoom well in.

Aye Gary, lots of rallies held in the SE. I believe I put all the SE rallies on the map last night, thus my "center of gravity changed" comment.

Speaking of which, there wasn't an album for the 2008 Fall SE Rally in the photo section that I could tell.  Do you need some photos of it?

There are lots of photos posted in the rally's thread, but none in the new photo album area.  How do we send them to Tom?  In a zip file via e-mail?

Send via email. No need to zip them if they are JPG or other already compressed format.  Just send as attachments to the email

Tom,
I am seeing only 8 balloons for the SE rallies. There have been 20 SE rallies in 18 different locations, so many are missing.

I have pictures of the "12 Days of Quartzsite" from a couple of years ago. Do you want those? If you do, this techno dummy will figure out a way to send them (asking Mike would probably be the best solution to that quandry).

Wendy,

I vaguely recall some "12 days of Christmas" photos in the respective QZ photo album. If you get a chance, take a look at the photos, and maybe you could send me the missing ones. You could either attach individual photos to an email, or put them in a .zip file and attach it. Last resort, I'll send you a sail mail address so you can send me a CD.

Yep, they're there. Day 10, Day 11, and Day 12 are at the very beginning and aren't labeled but all 12 Days plus Lead Singer Betty are there. Good, now I don't have to figure out how to upload my copies :)

Any chance of putting a link to the rally map on the Photo Gallery page? Might want to make a quick leap to the map after looking at some rally photos. Shuffling off to the Resources list to find the map is, ah, a  PITA.  :-[  Might also add it to the Main Menu on the Home page

I thought of putting links in the pin descriptions back to the rally report &/or the prespective photo album. Right now, I'm not up for doing any custom coding to the gallery pages, but I can easily link from each album back to the map.

Gary, I believe I now have them all plotted. Looks like first time around must have I failed to hit the save button, and didn't realize they were being deleted. Note that you won't see 2 pins in the same location where two rallies were held; The respective pin shows the two years. I'll get the links added when time permits.

Edit: Gallery menu now has a link to the map.

Tom,

There was another mini rally held in January of '97. Again, before digital days. It was our first trip west and we met Fred & Daisy and Tom & Margi at Justin's RV & Water Park outside Tucson. I think there were a couple other members there as well but I have forgotten who they were. Perhaps Daisy or Margi would remember. From there the three of us headed to Quartzsite via Yuma. It was a great trip. If I find any photos I will send them to you. I know I have some of the coyotes that would come into camp each afternoon for dog biscuits someone was feeding them. Not a good thing.

Daisy & Margi,

I have not forgotten about the video. Will try to get the DVD done this winter and mail to you both.

Bob:

We were there at that mud rally of FMCA at Perry.  ...

That was a really long time ago..... ;D

Daisy

That was High Falls Campground, across the interstate from High Falls State Park.  That was pre-popup (1996)
for us - actually the rental trailer was motivation to buy the popup.  Ken and Shellia were also there.  They went with us the Buckners (?) and we saw Ken's first southern cooking experience. He liked it!

Daisy

George & Joanne were there.  George wandering through the campground with his bottle of single malt.  Shelia explaining that the cats needed a new motorhome.

The first quasi forum event we attended was a dinner at the 1994 Harrisburg, Pennsylvania RV show. At the dinner was Gary Lee, Joe Lacy and a member form NJ who I can't remember (Ron P ?).

We were there.  Vague memories of the yet unnamed person being there.  Single guy.  Attended several forum events.

I suspect that Chris likes having Tom huddled over the computer 24/7 - it keeps him out of her hair. Just as long as he remembers  to say "Yes, dear" when SWMBO utters a command makes a request for something.

I remember that Gordy and Coleen Clark were there.  Gordy was still driving the Overland that Andy Griffith previously used as a dressing room while filming on location.  Seems like there was someone else there, too, but memory fails.  The trip from there to Quartzsite was really a lot of fun.

As for the video ....  ::)   Too bad our library doesn't have the capability to store something like that.  It was a classic "Fred Thomas pulls the wool over Margi and Pat's eyes" moment.  :D  I wish we had a video of Daisy rolling on the floor laughing at our gullability!

Margi, we actually do, but I've been reluctant to store videos there, partly because of the bandwidth issue. A better (for the forum) option is to upload videos to YouTube, and then the video link can be placed either in a message, or in a forum wrapper. Either of these options will play the video here, but using YouTube's bandwidth. Here's an example of the wrapper (low quality video - it was taken on a cell phone), and below is the same (low quality) video embedded in a forum message:

The video will take a little time. I have one of three tapes on the hard drive and I don't know if it is the one with "our" trip. I'll try to get to it soon.
