The April, 2005 issue of Seaworthy, the BOATUS Marine Insurance and Damage Avoidance Report, included an interesting article entitled 'Tow, tow, tow your boat safely down the street'. Some of the considerations discussed overlap with what we see discussed here in respect of TTs and 5ers, but there were some aspects we rarely, if ever, see discussed e.g.:
All of the above receive a lot of abuse due to complete dunking of a boat trailer, especially in salt water.
A reported 43% of their help calls are for issues related to flat tires, but they also discuss tires in a broader context. One interesting report was a well-meaning boater who replaced the worn tires on his trailer with four new radials. The softer sidewalls of the radials reportedly caused excessive sway on the trailer, which didn't stop until the boat came off the trailer, breaking the tie-down straps and leaving the boat sitting on the pavement.
Seaworthy is issued (mailed) free to folks who insure their boats with BOATUS, or can be purchased for a nominal subscription rate. Some of the stories and pictures make it well worth the nominal price.
