First Fly Fishing Lesson Tomorrow!
« on: February 18, 2009, 04:28:34 PM »
Most normal people would just pick up a rod and reel, watch a few people cast and then go do it.  Not me!  Oh no, I'm going to spend two hours (and some money) tomorrow and get a lesson from someone who really knows what to going on.  He owns his own fly fishing shop, guides and gives lessons, so in my book he's a professional.  I'll probably have him pulling his hair out in no time at all with my ineptitude.

For years my wife has worried about me getting another hobby (I've done almost nothing than play golf for 62 years as a hobby) so she keeps steering me to something and this is the flavor du jour for me.  I used to go bass fishing and enjoyed it, but this is a whole other thang (as we say down here in Texas).  I'm looking forward to all this but don't have a great deal of confidence in my ability.

I suspect you'll pick up fly casting a lot faster than I'd pick up golf. Be sure to let us know how it went.

Have fun in your lesson tomorrow.  Have you seen A River Runs Through It?  That movie made me want to go fishing!

People who undertake golf on their own, without lessons develop bad habits that are very difficult to overcome later.  The same is true with fly fishing.  By starting out with lessons you will develop good habits from the start which will make your new hobby a lot more pleasurable later on.   E N J O Y !

Me too Tom.  But then looking on the bright side we haven't been taught any bad habits by an instructor. ;D

Well, I got my first golf lessons when I was 9 and continued them every week until I was 22.  Even now, at 67, I refresh lessons twice a year.  I don't plan on doing anything like that with my casting lessons.  I did have fun today, two hours worth of it.  By the time I was through I was really beat.  The instructor made it look SO easy, but it wasn't for me.  I didn't do badly but I'll be spending a lot of time down by our local pond just practicing before I even think of trying to catch anything.

Hey Tom & Ron; Like you I never had fly casting lessons, but recognize that I do have a lot of bad habits that I haven't broken.  BTW I have lots of other bad habits too.

Sheltie:  You don't need to go to the pond to practice.  It works just as good out in the yard.

Some years ago, I took some Fly fishing lessons and have never regretted it yet! I loved to watch my Hubby fly fish and decided to join him in the fun. In my mind it is the most graceful and peaceful activity. Every summer we head for the Northwestern States to chase those beautiful rivers to get our "fix".  ;D

Life can't get any sweeter than that.............................. ;)

We will be workamping at Old Faithful this sumer.  One of the perks is we are both able to sign up for a class.  I will be taking Fly Fishing for the novice, with Rhea Topping.  Just won a bid on a fly rod.  8.5' graphite.  Now to find a reel.
