cushioned hitch shanks? Love em' or hate em'

Does anyone have any input on cushioned hitch shanks? Sounds like a good idea, just wonder what happens if the rubber gives, will it cause the pin to shear? Suppose to give a smoother ride. Any input would be appreciated.
