A new cell phone virus has emerged, but unlike Cabir, which spreads through high-end Bluetooth connections, this one is less exclusive. The CommWarrior virus can be transmitted through short-text messages containing photos, sound or video clips. Given the widening popularity of these multimedia messaging services, especially among teens, that means this virus could get us all.

The mobile phone industry, says it has learned lessons from the PC business and is prepared for such attacks. Both Symantec and F-Secure, a Finnish software security firm, make antivirus software for cell phones. But the new technology is up against human nature, which compels us to click on attachments even when we know we shouldn't.

Has you cell phone been affected by a virus and what step have you taken to protect your phone?

At least so far, the cell phone viruses are all directed at phones with the Symbian OS.

Ned,

How does one tell which OS the phone is using?

Phil

Go to the www.symbian.com web site.  They have a list of all the phones they support.
