We are just planning our trip this summer and are planning to take the southern route in order to avoid as many mountains as possible.  We will be heading from Kitchener to Grand Rapids, MI and will park in front of a friend's place, but from there on we are not sure where we will stay and if we should book campgrounds in advance.  We are going to try to get from Grand Rapids to Springfield, Missouri, the next day to Oklahoma, and after that i guess we can get to the Grand Canyon in two days.  This will be at the end of July.
The questions are:

1.  Does anyone have suggestions of where we should stay en route.
2.  How necessary is it to book in advance (we are definitely making reservations in places we plan to stay a while, but this is for passing through).
3.  I know there are some malls and Wal-marts where we could stop if we need to, how safe is it to do that?
4.  At the Grand Canyon, we are giving ourselves two nights, are there suggestions of where to stay and what to do?

Thanks in advance!  :)
