Electric brake problem

I lost braking power towing home over the weekend.  I traced wires from the unit to the engine compartment.  Three wires: red goes to back, black goes to power source and relay, second black wire dangling loose.  I don't see anywhere where it was attached.  Nothing obvious shows up anyway.  Any ideas?  Thanks.
 
What is your tow vehicle?  What are you towing?  What unit are you talking about?  If it is a trailer brake unit, what brand is it?
 
You need to help us out with more detailed info.  What brand of brake controller? You can probably find the manual on the internet if you don't have one.

Also: "Red goes to back..."  Back of what?

The wires from the trailer should go to a brake controller. The brake controller gets it's power direct from the tow vehicle 12v system (presumably the black wire you mentioned) but is usually triggered by the tow vehicle brake pedal & brake light switch. Maybe the dangling wire?
