I need help.  This is topic has probably been beaten around enough but....  I have a 2002 Chev 2500HD, with ext cab and 4x4 and a V-8 (6000L) engine.  Chevrolet tells me I can only tow 10,200lbs with this vehicle.  Does this sound right to everyone?  I currently pull a TT and we have been looking at upgrading to a 5th wheel.  I've seen many vehicles in parks and such pulling heavier weights than 10,200.  You cannot find a nice 5th wheel for under 11,000lbs.  Thanks in advance for your help.

That's in the right ball park for that truck. Specifics depend on  rear axle ratio, short or long bed, etc. A 2500 8.1L or diesel would be rated higher, but low 10,000 is right for the 6.0L EC.

Here is the 2002 Trailer Life Towing Guide:

I have a 2002 GMC Sierra 6.0L Ext Cab 2500HD 2WD with TT Pkg and it is rated at 10,200. The 4WD version was at the time rated at an even 10,000 (because of the 4WD). I had no intention of using the truck in 4WD necessary situations, just for TT pulling and decided a limited slip differential would be sufficient. So far the truck has been absolutely great as a tow vehicle pulling my Golden Falcon 31 FLS TT weighing in at a 9490 GVWR. The loaded weight for travelling w/o water on board is 8200 lbs and is well within the towing limit of 10,200 lbs.
