Ford F250 2006 Diesel problems with turbo

Every time I tow my light weight travel trailer my check engine light comes on.  Ford has to clean the turbos.  It is still under warranty for a few more months but I see this as an expensive problem when the warrenty is up plus not having my truck for several days.  Does anyone else have this problem?

That engine has had more than its share of problems with turbos and other mechanical failures. Ford had a falling out with Navistar (the basic engine block maker) over that engine and decided to get another engine supplier when they couldn't work things out.  Some of those engines run just fine with nary a problem, but if I had one that was problematic, I think I would be looking for a replacement. Even though it will hurt financially.

Yeah, its kind of funny. I heard a rumor that Ford was going to build their own diesel for the 2011 model F 250 that is supposed to get better fuel mileage. I asked a salesman about this while having my F150 serviced. Didn't act like they knew anything about it. Then as I checked out the service representive asked me if I heard about the new Ford diesel that was to be introduced in a year or two. Guess the salesman wanted the quick sale?

 My son drives a company truck that is a 2006 Ford F250 with a diesel. He has nothing but turbo problems. Has it worked on all the time. Says he personally wouldn't own one. He suggests a Dodge or Chevrolet because of these issues. I think the issues may be resolved but it would be nice to know the truth about Fords future. I would like to buy from the manufacturere that didn't take the bail out. Guess I will drag camper around with the F 150 and see what the future brings.

There are numerous reports of the new 6.7L Ford diesel, called the Scorpion. Supposedly the 4.4L version intended  for the F150 has been shelved, but the 6.7L version for the Superduty is on the way. Haven't heard an availability date yet, though.

Most of the problems I've seen with diesel turbos is with the air filter. If the filter is not doing its job, then what is called "turbo dusting" happens. I've seen this happen with aftermarket filters, ie K&N panel filters not seating properly with the stock air box and not filtering properly. I would look at your intake and at least rule out the possibility of it being the culprit. You could also send for an oil analysis to determine if the filter is doing a decent job or not.

Both Fords and Dodges newer diesels were problematic from the start, but Fords problems FAR outweigh Mopars.

It's a shame. Ford built the PERFECT diesel truck back in 95 or so, and they've done nothing but screw it up from there.

Sounds like the new PSD, which is not built by Navistar like the problematic 6.0L was, will be a beast...400HP and 725ft-lbs.

Wonder if the'll consider it for their A-class chassis?  They could use a FRED competitor to the Frieghtliner.

There already is one: Workhorse offers a Maxxforce (Navistar) diesel on its W20 and W22  chassis. The W22 is similar in size and capacity to the Freightliner FRED.

"They" meaning Ford.  While they own 70% of the gas market, if Ford wants to retain/grow that market share, they need to offer a diesel alternative.  This could be the engine to keep them in that race.

Never have had that problem in my 6.0L Ford diesel. Remember, the turbo gets pretty hot especially when towing, in the mountains, and at high MPH. Make sure to run the engine at idle for a few minutes to cool the turbo before shutting the engine down. If not, you can make turbo problems for yourself.
