Work Kamping at Camp Brinck
« on: December 30, 2009, 11:33:24 PM »
As usual, we have been spending Christmas with the Brincks. Paul & linda DeMars are also here. Pat said we had to stay through New Years this time. Since we have so much time on our hands Gary decided to put Paul and I to work. First we trimmed several tree branches (three loads to the dump) and then we proceeded to dismantel an old well pump house. Not wanting to make an extra trip to the dump we built a small fireplace and created a campground atmosphere. Attached are some photos.

Here's a few more photos...

It wasn't all work. On Wednesday we took the boat for a cruise on the lower Ocklawaha River and Jim shot a bunch of pics.  I'll let him post a few of those if he likes, but  #1 below is one I took of our cameraman.

Then we have Nancy in her new, post-cancer-chemo hair do and Linda DeMArs & Pat Dick sampling a cocktail.

The cruise down the Ocklawaha was a real pleasure. It was a beautiful warm day and there were very few boats on the water. Very surprising considering the number of boat trailers in the parking lot.

On our way back, Paul spotted an unusual bird. We turned around but it flew across the river. I finally got a shot of it but it was too far away. I cropped it and it appears to be a Black Crowned Night Heron. None of us had ever seen one before even though they claim it is the most prevalent heron.

I've attached a few photos including the two of the heron.

Definitely a Black-crowned Night Heron. We used to see them all the time in the Everglades, usually looked like grey footballs sitting up in trees.

Hi Carson,

Nope, it definitely wasn't a Great Blue. We saw several of them. Here's one that kept trying to get away but flew in the same direction we were traveling. ;D

Wendy,

Yes, they do look like footballs when hunched up. :) It's strange that this is the first time I've ever seen one and we live on a huge migratory path for most of these birds! In fact, the Titusville Birding Festival should be next month and it draws people from all over the world. They just completed the annual bird count this month.

Great reflections!  Are those mangrove trunks like the manatees hide around?  They look quite unusual.  The bird is certainly interesting.  I know almost nothing about birds except to enjoy them, but its head doesn't look much like a herons.  The Great Blue coming in for a landing is neat too.

Hi Ardra,

Thanks. Those are actually cypress trees. Mangroves are much smaller, more like a large bush. The small knobs are called cypress knees.

The Green Heron is very similar to the Black Crowned Night Heron in looks. Many people are only familiar with the Great Blue Heron so are surprised when they see another type that is not quite as large. :)

There are plenty of cottonmouths in this sort of  swampy Florida river, but we didn't see any this day. The upper reaches of the river have more - maybe the gators and the huge turtles keep the population down in this area. Turtles eat baby snakes - and baby gators too! We didn't photograph any turtles, but there were a few as big as serving platters sunning themselves on the logs.
