Hot Springs Spa travel route
« on: September 17, 2009, 10:10:39 PM »
In another 2 weeks we are completing our summer management assignment with Thousand Trails Management Services Incorporated (a company which manages Federal Campgrounds) and will be taking our time wending our way back to the West Valley of Phoenix Arizona.  We will be departing from a campground near Central City Colorado.

We are looking closely at a route that works it way down to Pagosa Springs, Durango, Sky Ute Casino near Ignacius, New Mexico, and on to Gallup New Mexico to enjoy the lapidary resources there.  Sky Ute Mountain Casino will give us easy access to Farmington, Pegosa Springs, Four Corners, Cortez, and the Mesa Verde area. We may also do a side shoot below Albuquerque to Sky City.

The question I have for this forum, is to ask if there are any hot springs along these routes that we can enjoy? We'd love to soak our weary bones as we enjoy a leisurely trip along this Southwestern Route.

Thanks for any help you can give us.

Smokey, Ojo Callente between Tres Piedras and Española has famous hot springs as does Jemez Springs S of Los Alamos.

Pagosa Springs has very popular hot springs, including a big pool, and there are several Passport America campgrounds in Pagosa if you wanted to spend a couple of days there. There are also hot springs at Trimble, just north of Durango. And there are hot springs at Dunton (north of Dolores, west of Rico) and a really neat hot pool and geyser that you have to hike to (including wading the Dolores River).

Wendy

Would that be you and/or Mike? Before or after FMCA-ABQ next March, Marlene and I are planning on spending some time there and at Canyon de Chelly and would love a "ranger-guided tour of Mesa Verde".

Bernie, that would be Ranger Mike, I was just a VIP. Don't know when we'll be back in the area (planning on Anza-Borrego, Quartzsite and then either Death Valley or San Diego for the winter) but if we're here when you're here, we'd love to give you Mesa Verde and Hovenweep tours. Keep in mind that we often get snow here in March !!

Wendy and Bob, thanks much for the great info.  Looks like we will have plenty to pick from.

Wendy we will give you a call when we are in the area.  Do those Passport Americas permit non members to camp there?

We might use Ute Sky Casino as it seems to be equidistant from everything and only costs $22 a night for full hookups.

You don't have to be a member to stay at the parks in Pagosa Springs but their regular rate is $27 and you get half off so it doesn't take many nights to save the cost of the PA membership ($44/year). We haven't been to Sky Ute since the RV park opened but on their website it looks very satellite friendly :) and the bikers are all gone so it should be quiet.

Thanks if you can (or if you can't) help.
