Hi everyone! What do you sail boaters think of a couple who has never sailed, buy a used 24 ft. sail boat keep it at the marina so we don't have to commute during the week. We would live on it mon-fri go home on weeends. We have always wanted to learn to sail! we have a motor boat but its to small for the Ocean. The boat is 1964 Columbia it dose need some work but we thought during the week we could do some work on it. How much work is a boat that stays in the salt water? Thanks

I know a number of folks who live aboard their vessel in a marina. Nowt wrong with that.

Be sure to wash down all the winches, cleats, and any other moving parts, as well as the deck and other surfaces, with fresh water after sailing in salt water.  If you don't, in time the salt will accumulate on the moving parts and then they won't move anymore.  Plan on hauling out at least once a year to clean the bottom and paint it as needed.

A 24 foot sailboat is very small to live in for more than a few days.  Good luck.

Fresh water is much easier to keep a boat in :)

Try renting a sailboat and take lessons first. You may not like it. A motorhome is a big expense in repairs and up keep. A boat is almost as bad.  Sal****er takes a beating on a boat, and the dock fees are expensive. You have to clean the botttom of the boat every year. You must really enjoy it, becuase its a money pit. There is a pharse ( The best time of owning a boat is the day you buy it and the day you sell it)  ;)

Brens,

We have owned two sailboats (10-12 years of experience), one in the Great Lakes and one in SF Bay.  If you buy it your best choice would be to hire someone to teach you to sail using your own boat.  It is unbelievably easy to learn to sail because it is very logical and straight forward.  That said, you probably will have to go sailing on your own boat another 6-8 times more before you feel totally at ease and confident handling and sailing your new sail boat.  Go for it.

For living on it during the week, make sure that the the marina has nice showers because 24 foot boats usually do not!
