Colorado Surprise
« on: September 26, 2009, 08:17:05 AM »
Last month when leaving Cheyenne Wy. heading back to Georgia, We decided to go down through Denver and take a southern route through Memphis Tn.
Arriving near Denver we took the E-479 expressway. Expecting to pay tolls, I had my billfold laying next to me but all the toll booths was closed. We thought maybe they had stopped taking tolls.
Yesterday in the mail, SURPRISE, was a bill for $22.50 from the state of Colorado. They had tracked me down with a tag camera. Not complaining, glad to pay as the road was excellent. Would be allright with me to pay more tolls for better roads.

They are doing that here in Texas also.  If you're a local you can get a toll tag and get discounted rates otherwise they mail the bill to you at the end of the month for your tolls from the camera.  It keeps the traffic moving atleast, by not have toll  booths collecting pennies.

We paid $9 when we got on but did not pay any more, same as you, because of the toll booths being closed. Did you pay $9 to get on? With $22.50 + $9.00 that is really a lot to pay for the 37 mile toll way. I got off at I70. Suppose I will get a bill next month also. I thought Florida was bad.

I also went through a checkpoint which said all vehicles towing, exit to checkpoint. When I got to the stop point there was a lot of trucks parked around the area and no information what to do. Someone sort of indicated that I should get out of there. I left. Will probably get a bill for that too.

My GPS led me to a toll freeway here in Canada. My Garmin GPS said it was toll, so it must be ;D. Something I have never seen mentioned on a GPS before. But we didn't see any toll booths, but now I am wondering if we will be sent a bill.

And if they can and do send us a bill to our NV home (NV plate), I assume it will cost some bucks based on what we've seen of Canada so far!

You can adjust some Garmins to avoid toll roads. I have mine (200w) set that way.

I would not want to do that here in Canada. I just want the best road, especially at night, when we do a lot of our driving. There are a lot of dangerous roads up here and a lot of good ones too. Good ones are worth paying for at times.

I have never found a toll road (not counting bridges) in the USA. However, I have never driven anywhere in the eastern part of the USA.

If you're from out of state in Texas, you get an extra bonus. According to the newspaper, it seems that the state hasn't figured out how to get the names and addresses for out of state tags so you don't get a bill. Was thinking about buying a square inch of land in OK and registering there. :)

I would guess that it's more that they don't want to bother rather than they don't know how. Your license plate with registered owners name and address is in the national data base.

Living close to I-17 I hear DPS on the scanner all the time getting information on out of state cars.

I've been to Texas and Colorado and without even trying, I avoided all toll roads. I didn't even know there were any in either state. I have never been to Oklahoma.

Don, when you say a Toll road in Canada, that's a broad statement it's a large country.  However, if you are referring to the 407 in Ontario, I know that up to and including the last time I was on it, they did not charge out of Province plates.  I guess it proved too costly to track down and attempt to enforce out of Province billings, so the just never sent out any.  However, our most recent trip on it was about 5 years ago.

It was my GPS that said "toll". IIRC, it was 5 south, from Kamloops to Hope here in BC.    From TC1,  my GPS told me to "take 5 toll south". I looked at the screen and it said "5 toll". It was a very good road but with no exits for many KM. It was no place to get tired of driving and we were looking for a place to stop. Finally did find a good rest stop near the southern end of five, just north of Hope, IIRC.

If it's really a toll road, I don't know. Only my Garmin Nuvi 260 said it was, no other clues of it being a toll road.

I will say that in Florida, getting from NW to SE, the toll turnpike is the way to go until you get to about West Palm. After that get off as they have a toll booth every few feet ( I mean miles ). Can get expensive getting to the Keys that way.

When I read the OP yesterday it reminded me that I also traveled that road and saw signs about a license plate toll a couple months ago, well low and behold DW says to me last night "do you know what this bill from Colorado is ? " guess what, they found me, the good news is they only billed my toad plate.

We did the Niagara Falls thing the year the fuel was almost 4 dollars a gallon. Paying that price & the 59 dollars for the NY toll road really made my miles per dollar go way up!

Well, today I got my bill from Colorado for the toll way around Denver  :(. It was $25. I paid $9 when we got on so it was a total of $34. The road seemed to be awfully short for that kind of charges. The toll bill was only for the car. I suppose it could have been $50 if they had seen the MH also. Guess I won't be traveling on any toll roads in Colorado any more  ;D. Maybe avoid the entire state.

We have them north, south, east and west of the Austin area.  Without them, it would be MUCH worse than it is.

I do not have any problem with toll roads. I use them quite often when traveling on them makes sense. The electronic pass roads like the one around Denver are OK for  regular users, but are not very visitor friendly. My big problem with the one at Denver is the cost, $1.25 per mile seems quite high. Florida is not cheap when towing. If you pay $10 for the motorhome, the towed car costs you $20 making the total package $30. Unhooking the car and driving separately would save $10. They set the system up to take care of truckers and use the same principles for RV towing. I usually try to avoid the toll roads when towing.

I like Colorado and from what I saw the last two trips I will probably go back, I will just stay off the toll roads.

I saw in the paper yesterday that the south end of the Florida Turnpike was going to photo license plate billing soon. From Miami to Florida City. The reason makes sense to me. Less cars having to stop and start, less cars idling at tollgates. Both a savings in energy and pollution and also saves money by not having to pay booth attendants. Convenient to me as when I go down this way, it seems there is a booth every few miles and this way I can get a bill at the end of the month and pay on-line.

E-470 in Denver went cashless about a year ago, and there is STILL confusion on how to pay.  HERE is an article from last Sunday's Denver Post about the confusion surrounding this problem, and also how you are supposed to pay while in a rental car.  :o

Lat Month we stopped in Kissimmee, FL for the night to see old friends and then headed to I-4 west. The easiest route there was on the W Osceola Parkway (toll) that has signs to I-4 via the Central Florida Greenway (toll).

Total mileage= 8 miles.
Toll=$8.70!

I'm trying to steer clear of tollways for awhile. ::)

also how you are supposed to pay while in a rental car.

I don't see why that would be a problem. The car rental places have to deal with people who get tickets from cameras (red light cameras in the USA and speed cameras in parts of Canada), so this should be nothing new.

I don't know if there are any speed cameras in the USA, but there sure are a lot of them South of Edmonton, Alberta. Or at least they have signs claiming such. We've noticed many locals speed right by such signs by well over 10 KPH (supposedly the speed they are set for to have tickets issued).

At DIA, it appears now that the Car Rental companies offer an option of a "daily fee" to cover the tolls on E-470.  I'm not sure if you don't accept this option, how you are supposed to pay the fee since the turnstyles are closed and unmanned.

$1.25/mile West of Denver is excessive, and we won't be using the toll road any longer. :o

When we flew into Denver in October, the car rental company forbid us to get on the tollway. They gave us printed directions on how to get to I70 West(the direction we were going).
