"On the Road Again: RV sales see an upswing"

Complete story here at USAtoday.com

Last year (and currently) lots of folks are trying to get out from under large RV loans, but at the same time I think a larger group of people are getting rid of time shares and island vacations for "closer to home" recreation.  Combine that with increasing larger numbers of baby boomers retiring, and the RV industry sure seems like it'll rebound nicely.

We were at Siskyou RV in Grants Pass, OR for warranty work last week.  They were selling lots of trailers, not as many motorhomes.  They said sales are way up.

Positive news and a somewhat bright outlook. However, I wouldn't use any stats with the title "Seasonally-adjusted annualized rates of wholesale shipments" as an indication of consumer confidence or changes in spending habits. Let's hope that dealers can sell some of those RVs.

The manufacturers have been predicting a turnaround at the wholesale level for the last 3 months. Dealer inventories are low and nearly all the 2007-2009 units, especially motorhomes, are gone off the sales lots. Dealers are going to have to order new production to have much of anything to sell. And financing for dealer inventory is easing up as well, making it more possible to floor plan new RVs.  It still hasn't happened in the motorhome market, though. Here's the raw data, showing that motorhomes are still off the pace of even one year ago, when sales were already slow.

Both Fleetwood and Monaco started back into production, though, and that should help bring some numbers up this month.
