I would probably go with the Kindle 2 but would give the Nook a good look in the store first. I think all the rest are far behind those two.

Also, when going to Amazon.com, I see a Kendle and a Kendle DX listed but not a Kendle 2. Is the kendle listed a Kendle 2?

Yes, I think the Kindle 1 is no longer in production.

I have not seen the Nook but I have a Kindle 2 which I am very happy with (July birthday present). So far the kindle has provided me with hours of reading. I was not sure I would enjoy reading from a screen vs. paper but I find I enjoy it more.

Also I can carry lots of books in a small space and download more and continue reading. Not sure if Nook does the same, but many authors allow Amazon to offer their books free. This is to get you to read them and if you like them then buy more of their books. Sucked me into some really good authors and I bit and bought more of their books.

One negative is that a few of the books are poorly duplicated (reproduced) with errors. In one case it was so bad it took away from the reading enjoyment but did not stop me from reading it. Do not know if this would be the same with Nook since I do not know how they input the book?

Both reading screens appear similar if not the same so I would base our next purchase on the cost and number of books available, cell carrier coverage area, and if I had access to wifi most of the time. I also would take a good long look at the Nook as it looks like good too. The Nook does appear to have more books and the cost/book appears the same.

Bottom line I do not think you will go wrong with either unit. The only thing is the Nook is so new that all the bugs may not known but neither are the customer WoWs!

While in a Barnes & Noble store a few days ago, I asked about the Nook, hoping to get a hands-on demo and ask some questions. They told me they don't have them in the store yet, but they can be pre-ordered at their customer service desk. Looks like the same story on their web site.

I was curious about when they'd ship, so I clicked the pre-order button and it says "Your order is expected to ship on December 18th so that it can get to you by December 25th". That's cutting it a bit close for a Christmas gift.

Edit: Just found this in the FAQ on their web site:

"Starting on November 30th, you can visit your local Barnes & Noble store and experience nook. All stores will have a demonstration unit for customers to try."

That Christmas gift still appears elusive.

I did order the Nook for my wife. The main reason we chose the Nook over the Kindle is that our daughter had also ordered the Nook and the Nook's ability to lend books to each other. Hope it was the right decision for us. As Tom said,ours is supposed to ship by December 18th?

Not quite a Kindle or Nook but I bought a discounted HP Mini netbbook this weekend and just loaded Kindle's PC software on it.

It really is easy to read on, just flip arrows to turn pages(or use mouse). We are headed to Honolulu for Christmas and I plan to load a couple of books and DVD's for entertainment on the plane.

WSJ today says the current readers may be obsolete soon. I'm waiting for the new Mac tablet. Meanwhile, I enjoy the Kindle app on my iPhone. The only problem is that it's hard to look back in the book to re-read sections. That's easier with a paper book. So I just bought another book at Costco for $15.

Well, most anything technological nowadays is obsolete almost before it hits the shelf! That seems to be the nature of the beast.

I also have the Kindle App on my iPhone, and it actually does work pretty well. I don't have a Kindle, so I don't know how the synchronization works, but you can actually read very comfortably on the iPhone screen. I'm still undecided what I want to get, or if I'll get it for Christmas. I do like the idea of the online books though.

Last week bot the small Kindle for my father. He needs the large type capability and the 3G access because he's too cheap to buy DSL and wifi. Subscribed to USA Today. Took awhile to find our way around the system. It's not like reading the paper or like reading USA Today for free on the Web, which I prefer.

Being old and stubborn, Dad seems a bit reluctant to use the Kindle, but he wouldn't let me return it. He's been using computers since the 60s and was an early adopter of PCs back in the late 70s. Anyway, I think it is great for people who have vision problems.

Doesn't look like anyone will receive their nook in time for Christmas. The message on the B&N web site has been changed to say:

"If you are shipping nook to your address and plan to give it as a gift:
Simply follow the instructions under "Giving nook as a gift?" and complete your checkout. Your free nook holiday certificate will arrive by Dec. 24, 2009."

The Buy Now link for the product says:

"Expected ship date Feb" 1

I sure hope they've advised the folks who pre-ordered.

The Nook really seems to have taken off in popularity. I finally got a chance to play with one at a B&N. I really like it. I also got to play with a Sony reader, and while the Sony has a few more "goodies" (ability to store and read pdf's natively for one), I preferred the Nook. The interface on the Nook took a little bit to figure out, but once I did, I was cruising through menus and selections like a pro. I liked the overall look of the Nook better and the screen did not seem to glare as much as the Sony. Between the two, I would definitely get the Nook. I wish I could get my hands on the Kindle to compare also, but I have not seen one to test. I do have the Kindle reader for my iPhone, and it works great. While there is a B&N reader, it does not mention if it is compatible with the Nook. Maybe there is an actual Nook app, I just haven't had time to look yet.

Thanks for the report Ed. In addition to the demo unit, did they also have inventory of the Nook? I'd hoped to buy a Nook as a Christmas gift, and was waiting until inventory arrived in stores. I'll call our nearest B&N today to ask if/when they think they'll get them. If the only choice right now is a gift certificate, I'll pass.

OH that's just great, I had my mom order a kindle for my wife. I had my wife order a kindle for my mom. NOW your telling me there is more out there

that's just my luck. I take it you can't transfer books from one kindle to another? that would've been a great way for them to save even more money. oh well maybe they'll remember...It's the thought that counts

good thinking there. If you can down load books into you computer though, then you could put them in either kindle I guess? Please remember I'm the point and click guy when it comes to this stuff. I can handle any of the audio/video stuff in the cars, but this computer stuff still makes me wish I was younger.

Well, yes and no. I asked Amazon about multiple Kindles and got the folowing reply.

It is possible to have multiple Kindle's registered to one account as each Kindle has a unique serial number. The advantage of this is that content can be shared between devices registered to the same account.

Each Kindle can be given a unique name so that sending content to individual Kindle's is easily accomplished.

Every Kindle must be registered to an account before you are able to download content to the device.

So there are two on the way, one for Grandma Kelly and one for our daughter.

Grandma Kelly doesn't know that yet though.

According to B&N customer support, my Nook is still supposed to ship on Dec. 18th. I hope that is correct because I had it shipped to an address we will be visiting and if the shipment is delayed, we may not be there when it arrives.

I did have an opportunity to try out my son-in-laws Nook and it appears to be very easy to use. If you are reading a book, the page changes pretty fast going to the next or previous page. But if you want to jump several pages or chapter, that is a little slow. I had read one reviewer on-line that thought the page change was slow on the Nook. so that was something I was concerned about but now I feel that it isn't a concern of mine. Never having used a Kindle, I don't know if they change pages faster or not.

Since one can read books free while in a Barnes & Nobel bookstore, this is something I might consider doing while my wife is shopping. Just grap a cup of coffee and read enough of a book to see if I want to purchase it. You can read a sample of a book prior to purchasing but sometimes that doesn't give me enough info. In the store I could read as much as I want.

Wrap up a picture of a Nook and with a map showing the route it will take when it's shipped. Have a stuffed toy flying bird of some sort carrying the package.

My nook was to have shipped by Decemer 18Th. I received an email form B&N that said it wouldn't ship on the 18Th but would be sent by special delivery to arrive before December 24Th. Will wait and see.

I did have an opportunity to try my son-in-law's Nook and my sister-in-law's Kendel 2 this past weekend. In my trial, I didn't see much difference. they operate a bit differently but I think that once a person becomes familiar with their choice, they will be happy with it.

Well, I've downloaded two books now onto my Nook and have read both of them. I enjoyed the experience very much and would recommend the Nook if it has the features you are interested in. For me, the feature that the Nook has, that the Kindle does not is the ability to loan books you've purchased to another Nook user. In my case, my son-in-law and daughter. I can loan them a book I purchased on my Nook to them for 14 days and vice versa. Other than that feature, I didn't see any any significant difference between the Nook and the Kindle. I would have been happy with either.

A purchased book on the Kindle can be shared with up to 4 additional Kindles on the same account. Does the Nook require that the lendee have a B&N account as well?

With the thousands of free ebooks available, I have not had the need to purchase more than a handful of books. I don't think I'll run out of free reading in my lifetime

And of course, those are available to anyone.
