Park Model?
« on: October 26, 2009, 04:40:11 PM »
I have already gone around this horn with others, but wanted to get some more info. We bought a 1999 36' Travel Line Whispering Pines park model trailer last week. There was a lot of question around here as to what a park model was, and everyone came to a few agreements. The first was that a park model is designed to be set up in a park, rather then towed around like a standard travel trailer. They typically don't have holding tanks and usually are set up with home type appliances.

This one has black and gray water tanks, but no fresh water tank, although it does have the access port on the outside and piping inside just no tank. Has awnings out the wazoo, but very little storage outside. It does have a full size fridge in it (more like an apartment size) and a washer and dryer, although tiny. It has electric brakes, propane tanks, battery, etc, but did not have safety chains (does now) or the breakaway emergency brake line (will as soon as I wire it up).

The price was too good to be true and it is in stellar condition so I bought it without much info to be sure I didn't get scooped. My main concern is the construction of the unit itself. Is there any reason to be concerned about using this unit like any other travel trailer? I installed all the eq hitch and sway control bar, and was going to install scissor jacks but due to rear end clearance issues I decided to just use the jack stand type stabilizers. I took it home last night which was about a 30 miles drive and all went well, my 1/2 ton 4x4 GMC pulled it like a champ. I have a prodigy inertia brake controller that works great, so it seems I am ready to rock but still feel uneasy about the "park model" designation. Any thoughts?

It is my understanding that these units are not roadworthy if used as a travel trailer. They are intended to be moved ONCE to a permanent site.

That is my understanding as well. The issue is this unit does not look like a typical park model after an hour or so on the net. Every one else I have talked to has said the same thing until they actually see it, then they arent sure. It weighs in with a gvwr of 7000 lbs, which means empty I think it would be 6000-6500. In addition, it has awnings, windows, lights, license plate holder with trailer
designation, and other travel trailer type goodies on it. Also it is the standard width of a TT rather than the 12ft width of a true park model, that typically looks like a mini mobile home.

A couple pics....

Have you checked the model number to see what the manufacturer calls it?

BTW, I learned that TL Enterprises, which is the company that built it, is dead, but is now called TL Industries. Just a minute ago I finally got a hold of someone at TL and here is what I found out. They did at one point build a combo model, which is a hybrid between a park model and a TT. It has some home type appliances like fridge and washer/dryer, but still retains a TT stove, toilet and tanks. They were prepped for a fresh water tank and according to him, as long as they have TT axles and not mobile home ones, they are usable either way. Since it has brakes and real wheels/tires I should be good to go.

Pheww! What a relief. I dont plan on using this all that much, and if we really dig it we may buyer a newer TT at a later date. But for the price I paid for it, I should be able to keep it a few years and so long as I dont tear it up not be in too bad a shape.
