The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a ripoff. The amount they charge is stupid. You can get just as good a view from many other spots at the canyon without adding to the idea of putting a Casino on the rim of the Grand Canyon.

Thanks everyone for your honesty.  I am definitely for saving money and what is the use of going if they don't let you take pics.  I'm sure there are other great areas of the Canyon  just as beautiful.......Thanks again!

They won't let you take a camera on the skywalk with the excuse you might drop the camera and damage the skywalk. If it is that fragile I won't go out on it. However, for a mere $25 they will take your picture.

If you go to the south rim and take the Red Route shuttle bus and get off at The Abyss you will get a view that is better than what you see on the skywalk and the whole thing is free.

It's also more than 50 miles off of highway 93. So that is over a hundred miles round trip from the main highway. About 4 to 5 hours from the South Rim. The last 14 or 15 miles are not paved. The last I heard the unpaved part was in bad shape.

And it's very expensive. It costs you $29.95 to get into the area (it's not part of the National Park). Another $29.95 to walk on the skywalk. Don't forget to add $20 per vehicle for parking. All this plus tax.

Here is a site that talks about the cost.

Most people take a helicopter to get there. The road would ruin an RV. I feel sorry for the rangers working the visitors center on the south rim. They tell me that 50% of the questions they get are "where is the skywalk?" It is about 200 miles away.

I don't the tribe will ever make big $$ on the skywalk. It's too far out of the way, it costs too much, it's too restrictive. But there are always people who are willing to try things like that. Me, I wouldn't go out on it if it was free.

I don't do heights (a hereditary medical condition), and have a huge problem with hotel rooms on the 84th floor. I'll go out on the balcony, stand frigid, hoping the door behind me didn't lock. The GC skywalk would totally freak me out.

You can go to the 84th floor???????? I can't go beyond the 4th or 5th without Valium.

Actually I have read that it has been a huge success. I don't know if it was hype but they had a great first year. They are planning on a casino and large hotel which makes me want to heave. I hope they fold. They are desecrating the Grand Canyon. I wouldn't go if they paid me.

I went skydiving once and my instructor had a fear of heights. 5000 jumps didn't cure him but he still loved to skydive. Go figure.

To me the Skywalk is just like Skydiving, Why would you jump out of a perfectly safe air plane just to fall to the ground?
And why walk out on a glass structure like that when you can see just as good a view from solid steady ground, and for free, and take your own pictures as much as you like. Nah, I just don't get it  ::)

The plane I jumped out of was and old Cessna 182. I felt I had better odds of landing safely with the parachute.

Mans ability to turn a buck is always amazing.  The national parks were in part formed to protect special places so that they weren't turned into another Niagara Falls.  Most all the views at the Grand Canyon are beyond words and man really can't add to the view.

I can understand the tribe needing money but I think there are other ways. Go ahead and build a casino and a hotel and an RV park, pave the road in, charge a reasonable entry fee. But it's like they're trying to make as much money as they can, as quickly as they can.

The skywalk is not located in the National Park. It is on indian land that is less than 75 miles from Las Vegas. The canyon is not as deep or as pretty there. I agree with Wendy, there should be another way for them to get rich other than desecrate the canyon.

I did watch a television show called Collosal Construction (or something like that. ) on the building of the skywalk.  It was indeed an engineering feat.  I would recommend watching the TV show on the construction of the sight and like has been said avoid the actual pricey visit.

Jo knows she would be sucked over the edge.  Probably would not get within 100 yards of it for fear of being sucked over.  On the other hand I AM !00 PERCENT POSITIVE if some how she got on it they would need to clean the glass floor. ::)

LindaH,

I was gladly going to pay the money so Ardra could walk out on it but, as you might guess, there is no way she would walk out on it, not even for a million dollars.  I wonder if for a million dollars I could carry her across kicking and screaming all the way?  Probably not a good idea!

My wife has no desire to go near it. I wonder why??

I saw that as well and noted that they require that everyone wear soft booties to walk out there. Dunno if they're overboots or socks.
