Unusual popup
« on: November 28, 2009, 06:09:23 PM »
A couple of days ago I saw an unusual rig pull into the campground. It looked like a small utility trailer with a storage pod on top. Later, I saw that the pod had been deployed like a popup. They left the next day, before I could talk to the owners.

That would be a terrific off-road camping trailer to pull behind a Jeep!

Can't tell from the photo, what does it say on the side of the pop-up on the canvas?

Looks like it's a Maggiolina Safari by Autohomeus.

I wonder if the roof to my crew cab would support one.  Might make a nice place to put the 8-year old or maybe a place for me to bunk when I've done something stupid.

There are tents that deploy on top of the pickup.  Friend of mine just put one on for when they venture away from the mothership TT.  They do a lot of offroad photography, keeps them off the ground.  I'll try to find a pic.

I'd be interested in seeing the photo Bill.

Meanwhile, here's a couple of photos of a car-top tent uploaded some years ago by forum member Rex Morrow.

Here you go.  The ladder swinging down somehow lifts tent to upright.  I need to see it to understand.

Looks pretty much the same I guess.  But this one has a pretty lady on the ladder.

Thanks Bill. I wouldn't want to sleep up there - it wouldn't hold my weight  :(

I am way over tents.  Pat and his wife (on the ladder) are still pretty young.  More power to them.

When I was in Brisbane Australia we went for a ride on a beach called “Rainbow Beach” you had to have a four wheel drive to get on the beach. The entrance and exits to the beach were very rough, the sand was soft and deep. I saw a lot of trailers that looked like this alone the beach, maybe someone for Australia can tell us more about them?

I always get a charge out of the aggressive tread on the tires on these "off-road" pop-ups - like the pop-up tires are on drive wheels.   ;D ;) ???

Since I may end up in one of these, I'm keeping up with PUTC's.

This is the USA co I recommended to Jim Godward for his daughter's look see last January: http://www.jumpingjacktrailers.com/features/

Ian Loxton put me onto this Aussie unit several years ago and is really the Glandenwaggon of off road tent campers:

Take a look at them all but especially the Pilbara and the Grand Tourer.
I would really love to have one of the later from Adventure Camping for the southwest and Baja! There's a shortcut road in central New Brunswick as well some in AK, the Yukon and BC that it would handle quite well, too!

Enjoy!!

The reason for this is that the trailer tires are the same size and a replacement for the tow vehicle or additional spares if you will.
