Need Input On Taking Motorcycle With Me
« on: November 09, 2009, 07:07:58 PM »
I've got a Ford Excursion that I'm pulling a 31' TT with.  I really need to take a lightweight (300lb.) motorcycle with me and don't have a receiver hitch to put a carrier in.  I need some ideas on how I can get this done.  Thanks! :D

Get a front receiver hitch mounted on the front bumper of your truck.   Get a receiver hitch mounted motorcycle tray.

You are good to go.

I have a cheap junky one made by Discount Ramps. Seems too flaky to use for any distance. I don't recommend such except for short distances.

But a guy who I work with who's really into towing dirt bikes around says the more expensive  Joe Hauler carriers are very good and stable.

You get what you pay for.

BTW, I own a street legal 2002 Suzuki DR200SE dirt bike as well as a few older street bikes (1971 BMW R75/5 and a couple of 83/84 Yamaha Ventures).

Here's the one I've decided to use.  Lightweight but strong, and doesn't use straps which have always made me nervous.  This holds the bike securely using an attachment point on the foot peg and a robust aluminum arm that holds the entire bike down with pressure.

Those look very interesting. Do you know anybody who has used those?

Yes, a local Yamaha dealer.  I like the idea of being able to lock the bike using this as well.

a friend of mine bought one of these.........
http://www.cruiserlift.com/swivelwheel.html
to take his motorcycle with him on the fifth wheel
he was really happy with it but now they have purchased a
small toy hauler. He did put his swivel wheel up for sale.
He said it was on Craigslist (phx) but I can't find it. Its
the one with the single swivel wheel. If your interested
I'll find out under what catagory he put it under. I know
its still posted on the board at work.

Ava,

I looked at those when I got my motorcycle. The problem is they state they are considered triple towing. Ilegal in all states east of the Mississippi. I personally don't understand why but it is the law. One may get by without any problem but an accident can ruin one's day.

Thanks for sharing, but I live east of the Mississippi so I guess that's not an option.  Interesting idea though.

Might could mount to the tt.  If in the Phoenix area check out Cliffs:  http://www.cliffswelding.com/index.html

You might find a speciality welding shop in your area.  Good luck

I think that's my best option.
