Kindle for PC Reader
« on: November 11, 2009, 09:55:42 PM »
I installed the Kindle for PC Reader today.  Works neat and is very easy to use.  Books download in about 3 to 5 seconds.  I also experimented with moving a downloaded book out of the folder where Amz puts them and then moving it back.  It worked fine.  The reason for this exercise was to see if someone could do the downloads here and mail them on an SD card or something to her son who is heading back to Iraq soon.  He needs to install the Reader here under her account, so the books work.  Alternatively, she could get him a Kindle on her account and send him her backup directory now and then, but they might start with the PC Reader first.  He has limited space.  Nice touch, Amazon.

Can you add ebooks that were not acquired through Amazon to the PC Reader?  Most of my books were not gotten from Amazon but from other sources and put on the Kindle via the USB port.  I know it won't synchronize those books as to bookmarks and notations, but it would be nice to be able to read them on a computer if desired.

Ned:  Don't know enough about the Reader yet.  I'm about to browse the discussion groups.  The Reader won't let me point to a different directory than the one it established for the Reader download books.  They went into "Users/(username)/My Documents/My Kindle Content."

Hey, I'll copy one of my Kindle backup book files in that directory.  See what happens.

Nope.  Didn't work.  The PC Reader showed a nice copy of the book cover, but I got an error that said it couldn't read the file and to redownload it.

Somebody will come up with a converter.

For non-Amazon, non-DRM ebooks, MobiReader is a good program.  Another useful tool to have is Calibre, it can convert just about any format to any other format of ebook.

I found this site and looks like it has lots of good info.  Sorry I have not tried it yet but there is so much it is information overload!  A little intimidating so I use the excuse that I have found lots of books on Kindle to keep me happy so...  if you find something that works please share.

On amazon.com, in the Kindle books, pick a subject, sort by price.  Lots of books for a $1 or less.  Often the top 50 list of new releases of Mysteries and Thrillers will have a now release or two for free.  It's fun to watch for that stuff.

I don't mind paying for new releases of my favorite authors.

You can also download a Kindle reader to a iPod Touch or iPhone.

Of course, still not in Canada.

And after my Kindle 1 broke, I still have not found another one.   :'(

Jennifer:

Thanks for the link. I just loaded the PC Reader on my new netbook and used your info to find a couple of free books that I have started.

I too downloaded the Kindle,, which by the way reads MobiReader files (Amazon owns the format as well I believe) Finished on and a third books already.  Downloaded a bunchy from Project Gutenburg http://www.gutenberg.org/catalog/ as well as from Kindle store

One of the Project books is the Boy Scout's Handbook.. A very handy guide

Choose the Mobil format for Kindle reading....   They also have HTML, ASCII and a few other formats.
