Looking for some desperate help here -

I need to know the distance from the ground to the doorway of a 2008 Georgetown Forest River Model 373.  I am making custom steps for a gift for this model and need the measurements without asking the owner.  Thank you to anyone who can help me with this project!!!

I sure hope so, too, Gary - can you answer this?  If a model is listed as a 30" standard door, then does that mean 30" from ground or 30" width?

I feel like a fish out of water here - I know nothing of the RV world, but can't ask the one set of people who know about these things - my parents!  The gift is for them...

Thanks for your response either way!

Veronica

The 30" is the width.  The distance from the ground will vary depending on the site and how it's pitched from side to side and front to back.  Sometimes no additional step is needed, sometimes it is.

Frankly I think you should give your parents a "gift certificate" for an enhanced step and then design and build it in concert with them.

I don't know what you are contemplating building - some kind of platform that sits on the ground? A modification of the existing step that opens and retracts? Or a total replacement of that step with a larger one that has more steps?  If just the platform. I suggest buying one of the one made for that purpose. Here's one that can be either 4" or 8" tall.

Thanks for all of the great input.  What we are building is a set of collapsible steps that they can easily disassemble to store in the "basement" of their RV and set up with very little fuss.  Mom is not terribly steady on her feet and the small steps that electrically come down from the unit are so small and steep for her.  "Our" steps will be bigger and sit in place of the built in electric steps.

My husband's profession includes working with laser cutting machines.  He can design and build steps to fit together something like a puzzle.  We looked at the links you provided and found some other pre-built stairs have taken the measurements from there to work with.  He will be able to put some adjustable and very sturdy legs on the bottom that will accomodate different inclines and pitches on various sites.

We envision my parents using the steps when they are parked in one location for more than a couple of days at a time.  For instance - they winter in Arizona so the steps will stay up for many weeks.  In the between seasons they usually stay at most places for about 7-10 days.  Dad should be able to piece the steps together within a few minutes and stabilize them with 2-4 screws.

Incidentally - they leave for Arizona on Dec. 26, so we're hoping to surprise them with this gift on Christmas day so they can take the steps with them right away.  Say a prayer for us that they work well.

Your input was great - Thank you again!

Veronica
