Van Horn,Tx. to Show Low,Az.
« on: November 18, 2009, 11:28:02 AM »
Has anyone driven from Van Horn,Tx. to Show Low,Az.. I am driving a 35' Class A and towing a car on a tow dolly. The map shows going I 10 west to 180 north. Is it a good route.

I've only driven 180 between Spingerville, AZ and Luna, NM and that section is a good road.  From Springerville, take US-60 into Show Low.  But I do suspect that the route you outlined is the best between Van Horn and Show Low.

Weather might be a factor in this decision, so when do you plan on doing this trip?

We will probably be leaving Van Horn,Tx around December 16- or 17, 2009. So I will  make sure I check the weather before I leave.

If there is no snow, pick up us60 S of Albequerque on I-25 and go past the big radio telescope array. I have done it in a 40 ft+jeep with no problems. The big grade on 60 is the salt river canyon, west of Show Low.

I agree with, if the weather permits take I25 north to US60 west 60. Actually after loking at 180 on google earth I would take this route if there is going to be snow vs 180. On Google 180 looks like it turns and twists, climbs and descends through the mountains. 60 has a relatively gentle grade up to the continental divide (just before Pie Town). I've taken this route from I25 to Show Low several times, it is a nice drive. Good two lane road, mostly straight and usually light on traffic.

If it times right stop in Pie Town at the cafe on the south side of the road - good pie.

Where do you plan to stay in Sow Low? The reason I ask is, due to the high elevation, this is a summer destination and most RV Parks are closed during the winter months. However, It is also ski area, since Show Low is in very close proximity of the White Mountains.

As far as your driving route is concerned -- At Las Cruces get on I-25 and go north to Socorro, from there get onto R 60, going west and that will take you right into Show Low. This will give you good, easy driving.
