Heading to Yuma!
« on: November 18, 2009, 01:02:38 PM »
Some of you may remember Cindy's uncle Tom Hall - he stopped by the Quartzsite rally two years ago, then lost his wife Linda while driving back home to WA state.

Well, Tom's doing fine.  He met Gail a couple of months ago, she also lost her husband last year, and they're planning to get married next spring.

In the meantime, Tom and Gail are in Yuma, fixing up Gail's winter house near the Foothills.   It stood vacant for 4 years during her husband's illness, so they stayed in Tom's motorhome while they got the electricity and water re-connected, cleaned up the interior, etc.

Tom called yesterday and said he could really use some help painting the outside of the house, and by the way, there's more than enough room for both of our motorhomes in their driveway.  And he'd really like to have an electrical connection or two for them.  Oh yeah, the guest house out back is also available.

So we're having the Wiechert family Christmas party at our house this Sunday, then on Monday I'm heading south with the motorhome, stopping over in the San Francisco area to spend Thanksgiving with my Mom and the rest of my family. Cindy has a couple of commitments that will keep her here through the first week in December, then she's flying to New York City to visit her daughter and will meet up with us in Yuma on the 19th.

So we'll be in AZ this winter.  Whoopee!

Lou,

I'm not sure whoopee is exactly the way to look at it.  It sounds like you will have plenty to do.  Enjoy!!

Very Cool Lou,

We won't have  much of   December in Yuma  after you arrive but do give us a call.  Send pm for phone number .  We will leave for  Christmas in Long Beach Ca then on then on Tucson for the RV Forum New Year's rally.  Then  Indio  then Anza Borrego then  Quartzsite and then Death Vally.  Life is rich and full.

Bertty, That's a circuitous route you're following ! Looks like we're hitting a lot of the same places - we're doing Anza Borrego, then Indio, then Quartzsite, then maybe DV. Unless we go home after Thanksgiving to regroup and get a new toad. Although we can probably find an old VW easier in so Cal then in the back corner we live in.

Hi Lou, we'll be in Yuma from mis December, for our first RV trip west.  We're at the Fortuna De Oro site near/in the foothills, so we won't be too far apart.  We're booked into Quartzsite, as are a few others from the Yuma area.  I'm sure we'll make a point of meeting for a pop or two.

How's the weather out in Yuma this week?

We are having 50 MPH winds and 2" of snow at Fort Huachuca,
better than last weeks 71 MPH.

Thinking of heading to Yuma...

I think Yuma flew into SV yesterday, seeing all that dust flying by.   ;)

There was a lot of dust in the air here in Tucson yesterday.  I saw an official gust report of 48mph and sustained winds of over 30mph.

We had some of the dust storms yesterday too, but it didn't seem to be as bad as in the Tucson to Phoenix area.  The wind is down, but not gone today, but and it is a little cooler than the past few days, but still higher than when we were in Benson.  The low last night in the park showed as 39 F on the coach's thermometer.
It is nice enough that Donna and I went for a drive up to Castle Dome about 30 miles or so north, in a National Game Refuge.  A lot of old dirt road, but true desert.
Lou, are you in Yuma yet?

That wind that hit ya'all in Arizona, hit us first here in Anza Borrego....60 mph gusts but not a lot of blowing sand. Today was cold (got down to 34 last night) but clear and no wind.

We're just about done with our 30 days at Palm Canyon (#47). Moving to Salton Sea next week. Had rain 3 times since we got here and there are little green things sprouting up all over. The price you pay for enjoying the desert is a big wind once a week....a small price to pay.

Enjoy

Last year we had 92 (yes Ninety-two) MPH tornado...tore many roofs off the houses in town...
most rigs had to turn into the wind...

Where is good spot on Salton sea? Does it still smell there???

Funny, but we've never been at Salton Sea when it smelled....lucky, maybe. Headquarters campground (full hookups) is on the edge of the VC parking lot, great views and easy walk across the lot to the beach. Of course, there is that highway full of trucks and train tracks running nearby. There are several boondock campgrounds on the east shore but I think most of them are closed this year because of state park budget cuts.

The high winds yesterday were so bad that there was a brownout (blowing dust/dirt/sand blocking vision, as bad as heavy fog) on I-10 near Casa Grande leading to multiple accidents with 3 dead.

Ed-a couple of years ago, Fred Thomas led a group from QZ down to the Castle Dome area where there is a silver mine in the middle of BLM land. They are converting it slowly into a mining museum and give great tours. Don't remember the mile marker, but it is at the end of the Castle Dome Mine Road turnoff.

Pierat, we are at Fortuna De Oro in the foothillls of Yuma.  We've already had the pleasure of suppers (dinner) with a couple of Framily (Frank & Barb and Terry & Betty) each of which we met during their trips to Atlantic Canada.
Bernie, we drove past the "museum" deciding to just explore.  It is an easy trip up from the south, but the road quickly becomes 4 wheeling north of the museum, but according to a map at the entrance it goes up to meet a better cross road.  We hadn't gone prepared, no lunch and more particularly no water, so we drove for an hour or so the turned around, but the sights were beautifull and we only saw 2 vehicles who were parked and their owners hiking.
