Anyone make a 24 foot class A pre 2009?
« on: November 19, 2009, 02:45:51 PM »
I just purchased my first RV a class C but I am hoping to step up to a class A in a year or two.
I see a ton of great deals on used coaches. Did anyone make a 24 footer pre 2009? I see the new Winnebogo Via
is 24 feet and perfect size but Im hoping to find something in the used department a little cheaper.

Thank you!

None that I know of.  26-28 is about as low as most of the Class A's go.

The winnebago brave, is the smallest A class I have seen. There is another rare animal I found in an RV lot but the name scapes me. It looked like a loaft of bread. :D

The small Treks were made by Safari before it was taken over by Monaco.

If you go old enough (late 70's and 80's) you can find Class A's in the 22-26 foot range. They do kind of look like bread trucks, though.  ;)

GMC made a beautiful coach in the late 70's and it is still in demand among aficionados. Take a look at the gorgeous GMCs here - they were mostly 26 feet.

Thanks Gary

They actually do not look out of place regardless the time line. Some are kind of neat looking. Thanks for the link.

Regarding Class A is it the weight that mandates you have to get a class B license?

I just sold a 1994, 24 foot Monterey by Cobra. They are a narrow body, short unit with no basement storage. It was a good unit that I put 55,000 miles on in the last 13 years.

The type of license needed depends on the state you are licensed in. Some have no special requirements for private RVs, while others will have license classes or extra endorsements based on weight and sometimes on the use of air brakes. Where weight is  a factor, 26,000 lb GVWR is usually the dividing line for a special class of license.

Take a look at the Early 90's (90-92) Aero Cruisers. They are rare, but well laid out and economical. Decent water tankage and a seperate show. They come in various interior configurations.

I searched for a small Class A for almost 2 years before I found out about these.

has a lot of info.

I have a neighbor who has a GMC - 1970"s era motorhome that has been sitting in his yard for over 20 years with a for
sale sign on it. I've never stopped and looked, but I guess he wants to much for it since it hasn't moved since it was parked there. It's a shame to see it in the weeds and black streaks all over it. It's a real classic now and would look nice after a LOT of work.

Those old GMCs still look pretty good when they've been maintained.  Friends of ours have owned two and loved them but had to give up RVing so both were sold.  Would you believe my step-father worked in the GM model shop where they did the mockups during design?  On one of our visits we went to see him at the plant and they were doing the shaking tests to be sure it was roadworthy.  Very interesting to see what went into the design.  We considered buying one but couldn't afford it back then.

If you are willing to go back as far as the 80s, Barth made quite a few 24 foot models, and even some 22 footers.  For their size, a decent amount of outside storage compartments, and excellent build quality.

This came up on another thread a month or so back -- and I posted this link to a 24' Trek. That's the one with the bed that comes down from the living area ceiling, so there is no length needed for a bedroom. I almost bought one of these new in '95 but they were priced out of my budget. Back then they had a bus front end that I liked better than the later models.

Remember the forum fellow that was one of the Iranian hostages? Can't remember his first name (was it David, or Gary or . .) but the last was Lee. He was able pass the time during his captivity planning to buy a MH with his Maine Coon cat on board and criss cross the US. Everyone suggested he keep his cat tied when outside, and his response was always about the importance of freedom. Anyway -- he drove a 24' Trek.

We own a 1993 27' Itasca Sunrise. I realize that this is not not exactly the same as 24ft but hey, it's small by present standards.
We've owned it 11 years and added  about 80,000 miles during that time, with very few problems

Since the rear wheels are so far forward we can back into very short camping lots that are intended for much shorter units.

Some day we will replace it and it will be another shorty.
