Hi All -

Does anyone have experience with the dentists in Algodones Mexico?  I guess I need some expensive dental work done and have been told that top quality work can be found there at less than half the cost of that found in the US.

On the surface, the stories I've heard about Algodones seem to fall in the "If it sounds too good to be true" catagory.

The dentists in Algondones are top notch.  Most have been at least partially educated in the US.  We've had dental work done there for years and it's all been excellent and much lower cost than here in the states.  We can give you a recommendation if you like.

We have had lots of dental work done there including crowns, root canal, cleaning and a tooth implant.  The cost was much less than half of what we would have paid in the states.

I had some dental work done last year in Los Algodones and I'm a very satisfied customer. You can also get a new pair of glasses in 1-2 hours there.  The problem is the long lines you have to wait in to get out when you want to leave.  Best to get there early in the morning and out late morning or early afternoon to avoid the long lines.

Eight years ago I had a tooth extraction and bridge done there. I never had any problem with it until it cracked after 6 years. I went to a top notch dentist in Portland, OR for repairs. That dentist said the bridge was high quality, but maybe 10 years behind the current technology. He then put in an implant and crown for about 6 or 7 times the cost of the original bridge.

By the way, I still have a part of the bridge in my mouth. To save the cost of another crown, the dentist cut the bridge part off  and left the remainder attached to the neighboring tooth. I have dental insurance for now, so probably won't head south for dental work.

As far as backups at the border, I have found that, if you wait until March or April, the trafic is much lighter. Also, be sure you walk across instead of driving.

Time of day makes a huge difference. We went in and out of Algadones before 10.00am 9.00am yesterday (forgot that Algadones is on Pacific Time). Only two people in front of us at the border. OTOH I've seen us come back late afternoon and the line was around the corner and way up the street, with wait times 60-90 minutes.

FWIW the new CBP station is open. Larger building to replace the small shed they had. Still only two agents checking passports.

Try to get your dental appointment early in the morning.

The new exit from the CBP building really confused us.  We started walking north to get to the parking lot ramp before realizing the exit had put us north of the ramp :)  You need a GPS just to find your way out of the place.

My Los Algodones dentist is on Arizona time.  It even says so on their business card.  Don't know about the rest of Los Algodones, but I thought they were on Arizona time also.

Rolf, coming from Yuma, you cross the state line and pass a sign that says "Entering Pacific time" before reaching the Algadones turnoff. Maybe I just made an assumption.

The dentists run on AZ time, other businesses (like the liquor stores) run on PT.  Our dentist states that on her business hours sign.  It's not unusual to see people from CA arrive an hour late for their first dental appointments.

I was there a few years ago and think I paid cash but am wondering now if it's possible to pay for your dental work with a credit card.

Very few businesses in Algodones take credit cards.  A few will take checks with ID but most are cash only, especially the dentists.

We've found dentists, drug stores, and optometrists take checks. Most of these folks have US bank accounts.

Great info from all!  Sue and I will be leaving Oceanside en route to Livingston, TX at the end of March, so it sounds like we will be at Yuma at about the right time of year.  We will make sure to simonize (syncromesh?) MATCH our watches with the Algodones dentists and will make early morning appointments.

Ned - You have a recommended dentist?  Anyone else?

Several of us use Dr Alma Luna, (Tel 011-52 (658) 5177659) and are very satisifed.

Thanks Jeff - and thanks to Shastalake for the link to the NBC link.

One thing I found last year before going to a dentist in Los Algodones, is that Los Algodones does not appear on any US Atlas (at least not on any of mine).  I've looked at 4 or 5 Atlases and I didn't see Los Algodones on any of them.  I don't understand why.  Lucky for me, Streets and Trips knows how to find it.

Chris has also used Dr. Luna and was very satisfied. The gal speaks good English, was educated/trained in the US, and her brother has a dental business next door. If a root canal is needed, she'll refer you to a specialist up the street. Dr. Luna's receptionist will take care of all the details, including making the appointment up the street. That guy is good but speaks no English.

It's not in the US  ;)

Pretty hard to miss Rolf; From I-8, follow the sign that says Mexico  ;D
