I wish to make a public apology to Buck (valleygeocher).  He posted a for sale in the ?Deeded Lots in Rio Grande Valley? thread.  He listed an email address for anyone interested to get in touch with him.

As I am interested in finding a purchasable RV lot at a low price, (initially as an investment, later as a form of price protection) and his offer seemed to fit the bill, I tried to respond to the email address he provided.  I know this is stupid, but my email got rejected.  I then realized he was showing things like ?at ? instead of ?@? and ?dot? instead of ?.?  I should have been smart enough to realize what he was doing, but I thought either he did not know the proper format, or it somehow got corrupted or interpreted by the forum software.  So I listed his address ON THE PUBLIC FORUM as I thought it should be and asked him to confirm.  I failed to realize this was a cool trick to beat the spam miners.  So I innocently exposed his address and he got 50 spams within the next few hours.  I am horrified at the consequences of my error and I know how much I hate spam myself.

He asked me to edit it out, and I did so as soon as I got his message, but unfortunately that was many hours later.  My email is not real time and I only check it once or twice a day.

In fact I deleted the entire text of my post on the board to make sure I did not miss anything.  I know he is upset with me via subsequent emails I have received, and I cans only apologize and admit to my stupidity.  I believe Buck thinks no one could be this stupid, but I really am in that area.  I would never in a thousand years intentionally exposed him to spamers, and it never occurred to me that was exactly what I was doing.

Buck, I feel very bad you are upset and I deeply apologize.  I also thank you for showing me a cool way to publish an email address without it being mined by spammers.  I am just sorry that I learned at your expense.  This forum is so close, so tight,  and so family oriented, that I have forgotten that millions of people have access to it.

I know it doesn't help but I'm sure all of us have done similar things including wishing we could retract some e-mail we sent, etc.

I am surprised at the number of spams he received. Thre is really no excuse for an ISP to allow that to happen. Technology exists an is being deployed by the smallest of ISP's to prevent spam. Our very small ISP uses a product called Postini which it provides free and it has done a fantastic job of keeeping spam away. In fact, I no longer use the Junk mail capability in either Outlook or Thunderbird; its ON but I never get any spam.?

I'm surprised at that number of spam messages too Leo, especially in such a short period of time. IIRC Buck PM'd me asking me to change the format of his email address in Smoky's message, which I promptly did.

It's unlikely that the spam originated from that one incident of the email address.  These pages are not static but are generated on the fly so it would be very unlikely that a spambot would have found it.

Smoky,
Regardless of whether your actions did or did not cause the massive influx of spam reported by Buck, your apology shows you to be a class act and I appreciate it. No one likes spam but nobody dies from it either. I think that a person wishing to totally avoid all spam should consider not ever going on the internet. Otherwise, be prepared. Spam happens.

Thank you, Smoky. The apology is certainly accepted and I also apologize for being upset. I'm just so fed up with all the Vialis and Viagra ads, when they flood in. For the past few days each time I've logged on, there's another half-dozen of those ads from Rosa and Michelle and Maria.

I thought that my "spamblockers" had finally gotten rid of them, then there they came again.

Quite ok my friend.  I know it really upset you and I am so sorry I was slow to catch on to the problem when you sent me emails.

Buck I can understand why you got perturbed, I made the mistake of putting my Addy on the forum and got bombarded with the spam myself.  Couldn't figure out how until just now. I 'm quite sure it wasn't done on purpose just as mine wasn't.  Guess this old goat ain't too old to error and then learn by the mistake.  Your misfortune was a learning lesson for me as well as others.  So for that I thank the both of you and just sorry it happened.

Are you folks sure you didn't have your email addresses showing in your respective profile? Did you check the box to hide your email address?

I have had very good results with OnlyMyEmail.? ? http://www.onlymyemail.com/home/index.php?

They intercept all your email and filter out the spam -- and other infestations.? They send out daily or even twice daily reports to users detailing the spam intercepted and allowing you to review it.? If the net caught something that should have gotten thru, you can click a resend button and get it respent.? You are also offered the choice of clearing that sender for future sends or not.? ?Costs $3 a month charged to my Amex card.? ? Give them a look see.

Now I did.

Well that makes a lot more sense. I've received maybe 5 or 6 spams at my admin email address here since January. Thanks for clarification.

I know it's hard to believe, but today so far, I've received 9 spam emails from First Petroleum and Pipeline. Each comes from a different email address and is touting FPPL as a GEM OF A STOCK. There's no link to opt out and this last one comes from Juliana Lara. Because the header has dozens of email addresses, my SPAMBLOCKER sends to my spam folder, but I have to manually delete each message.

I never received ONE SPAM FROM THIS SENDER BEFORE MY EMAIL ADDRESS WAS PUBLISHED ON THE FORUM.

No one need take any blame, but here's what the PROPERTIES says:

I hope no one else starts getting them.

I suspect it's coming in to an alternate address, so it probably has nothing to do with the subject of this thread. Wish I could figure out how to get rid of it.

Buck

I can't make the connection between those spams you're receiving and this forum. As Ned mentioned, the pages you see here are all generated dynamically; they don't exist as pages per se and are merely the result of queries to a database. Every time you click a link such as "Show new replies", the database is queried and the result is sent to your browser. Similarly, if you click on a topic to read, a query is sent to a database and the result is sent to your browser. These results of queries are wrapped in one or more templates to create the forum look you see on your screen.

Someone would have had to request and look at Smoky's message during the short time before I changed your email address, or they would have had to request and look at your profile before you decided to hide your email address. Spammers typically don't sit at a screen reading forum messages and gathering email addresses manually.

If the above were not true, my admin email address here (which is not hidden) would have been deluged with spam a long time ago. I've been here daily since I first installed the forum software early this year and have posted over 4,400 messages here.

I never received ONE SPAM FROM THIS SENDER BEFORE MY EMAIL ADDRESS WAS PUBLISHED ON THE FORUM.

And I'm sure you'll receive spam from other spammers who have never sent to you before. I get lots of spam on my other email addresses daily and they're not all from folks who sent me spam previously.
