I am about to buy a 2004 Coachmen Freedom Class C RV with a chevy 350 6 liter engine. The hitch is rated for 3500 lbs., but I plan to haul about 4800 lbs. Can I put a bigger hitch on?  Will there be an issue with the motor pulling the load?  I'm not in any hurry, and don't drive in mountainous areas ... Please advise.

Michaeljay, welcome to the forum.

You can install a higher weight rated hitch, but are you really upgrading the rig's ability to tow heavier loads?  Probably not.  To determine that you need to consult the the various weight ratings for your coach.  The GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating), the GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) and your GTW (Gross Towing Weight).  These terms are explained in our library.

In short, the GTW cannot be increased by installing a stronger hitch, and the GCWR cannot be safely exceeded even if the hitch were improved.  Damage to the drive train could result and/or braking efficiency would definitely be compromised with higher towed weights.
