I'm going on a 3200 mile trip.  Most legs of the trip will be between 300 and 500 miles.  I am towing a 2008 Jeep wrangler 4x4 unlimited with automatic transmission.  Is it recommended to either disconnect, and have someone follow behind me for a certain period of time? Or should I simply turn the engine on for a certain length of time, every so many miles? Or is this not necessary at all?

The owner's manual should give instructions for towing your Jeep.  Look under Recreational Towing in the index.

There is no distance limit on towing a Wrangler, so no need to disconnect or run the engine.

Find the towing section in the owner manual, as Ned suggests and follow the instructions carefully. If you do not have the manual, you can download it here:

A summary for the 2007 Wrangler can be found here:

In 2008, Jeep added one thing to what is summarized above - disconnect the battery negative terminal (to prevent battery discharge while towing).

I had read the manual pretty thoroughly and it made no mention.  But someone at a campground once asked me how often I stop to run the engine and thought I would ask the experts.  Thanks guys.
