Four of us who are in Moab this week signed up this morning at the Portal RV Resort for a 2011 RV Forum rally with arrival on May 8 and departure on May 15, 2011 (seven nights).  In past years many of us have arrived early and stayed late, but because the FMCA 4WD chapter has the entire park for the first week of May, early arrivals will not be possible.  Each person needs to call Portal to make their own arrangements.  Portal's cancellation policies say that individuals can cancel up to 48 hours in advance of arrival without incurring charges for the entire time as is the case with group reservations and group discounts.  It is for this reason that we are not set up with Portal as a group known as the RV Forum, so please don't say you are with the RV Forum ? just make your personal reservation.

The information you need is:
Portal RV Resort
1261 N. Hwy. 191
Moab, UT 84532
Phone: 435-259-6108

Email: [email protected]

As of this morning (Saturday, May 15, 2010) the number of available sites for May 8-15, 2011 in each of the three sections (shown in the attached photo) is as follows:
  New section, Premium sites: 19
Old section sites 1-25, full hookup 50 amp sites: 11
Old section sites 26-36, water & electric, no sewer, 30 amp sites: 11

Please post in this thread when you make a reservation so that we all will know who is attending.  The first names on the rally attendee list are:

FitzGerald (Ardra & Jerry), site M-20
Kuch (Ken & Sheila, site M-19
Sherow (Debby & Randy), site R-54
Weimert (Barb & Frank), site M-21

Attached is a site map of the Portal RV Resort.  For your GPS this is the Lat & Long of the Portal RV Resort itself and your GPS will turn you right into the property.  N38 35.367  W109 34.130  Elevation 3,926 feet

All $40 premium sites (see attached photo) are M-13 to M-34 and R-45 to R-71 and have good satellite access no matter whether your dish is a front, middle, or rear mounted one except for R-56, 57, and 58 which require a rear mounted dish.  These sites have very wide and very long cement slabs (full hookups with 50 amps) with swimming pool and sauna access.

All $35 sites 1-25 (good gravel and full hookups with 50 amps) have good satellite access (front, middle or rear mount) except 21 and 22 which require a rear mounted dish.  No pool or sauna access.

All $30 sites 26-36 (good gravel, water, 30 amp, and NO sewer) have good satellite access.  No pool or sauna access.

By the way, they will not absolutely guarantee a site until the date gets closer because they do have to move folks around to fit everybody in.  This is not new; it has always been their policy.  You can ask for a specific site by number when you make your reservation.

Remember this is NOT a group event.  Everybody must make their reservation in their own name and do not mention the RV Forum.  The reason for this is that you as an individual can cancel up to 48 hours before your arrival and get a refund but if you are in a group reservation with a group discount you cannot cancel and get a refund.

By the way, if you want to see a previous discussion on having the rally at Portal, the following link will take you to the relevant RV Forum thread:  Rallies, Shows, & Events > Information for a Tentative Moab 2011 Rally.

Since it is Betty's turn to plan our " vacation" for  2011, we( Terry and Betty Brewer)  have called for reservations in the  $35 seats at Portal.  Our vist to Moab will focus on 4 wheel drives in our Jeep and Terry will hire a guide to do  some of  the extreme rides in our Rubicon.  whoo hoooooo.

I am looking at the possibility of another leg of the trip to the  4 corner area .  Watch for details...
Betty

Wonderful!  Brewers are added to the list.  That makes five!

And if your a Veteran, member of AARP, AAA, CAA or FMCA, mention that while checking in, and there's a 10% discount.

The heavy rain we had here at Moab the other night encouraged those of us who are currently here at Portal to go for a cement pad site.  ;D

We be Jeep'n

:) :) :)

Don't know if we're going to make it there or not but went ahead and made reservations. They told me that the premium back-in sites, M13-23 are $45. The pull-in sites, R45-R48, are $40. This matches what their website says. I reserved R46 which is close to the dog park. Of course, it's also about as far as you can get from the pavilion...I'll get some exercise :) Figured it was worth the extra $5 per day for the bigger dog area and the pool and sauna. Sure wish we could get both the veteran AND FMCA discounts.

BTW, the Ute Mtn Casino campground in Cortez would be a great place for another leg of the rally if anyone is interested. Lots to see and do around here.

Right now, we're open the two weeks before Moab. That would work for us. We have never done Canyon de Chelly and other goodies in the area.

Cortez and the 4 Corners areas for a couple of weeks before Moab, sounds good to me right now. There will be a national Alfa owners rally around that time, but the exact date and location have yet to be decided upon. We'll stay in the 4 Corners loop. I just wish that more of the framly had been able to come to Moab this year. It's been great here. Debby and I took a ride today with the Weimerts along Potash road and then up "a genuine white-knuckler, narrow and steep with tight switchbacks" (to quote the description of the road up the face of Shafer Canyon into CanyonLands Nat'l Park in our Utah Byways book). And it was, indeed, spectacular. Being a relative newbie at 4 wheeling, now I truly know why I have a Jeep!!!!!
Randy

Shafer is a great ride. You want "white knuckle" do it going DOWN. Or in a sedan....almost always someone doing it that way.

Wendy

Wendy,
There was a small Subaru station wagon going down hill today. And we talked him into turning around. He just didn't have the clearance.

Randy, Debbie, Frank and I took the Potash Rd trail to Island in the Sky. Which included part of the Shafer Rd. It's still a 2 wheel drive. And the ponds are just as blue as ever.

There's a Miata car rally here in Moab this week.

Barb

Barb, Every time we've done Shafer, there's been a sedan, usually a foreigner in a rental, driving the road.

How long are all you 4-wheelers staying in Moab?

Wendy

Wendy, tomorrow (Monday) is our last day.  :(  About the types of vehicles on Shafer, I'll never forget seeing a young couple in a VW campervan happily bouncing down the trail.  They were swaying back and forth so much I wondered if they'd make it down without bouncing off the edge.  Happy to hear you've reserved your site here.  :)

While the others did Shafer trail, Jerry and I hiked out to Delicate Arch.  We thought of you, Lorna, and our previous hikes there.  And also decided you guys who went up to the La Sals last year wouldn't be doing it this year.  There's a LOT of snow up there and we thought we saw fresh snowfall up there the other day.  Bet the road is still closed.  Delicate Arch was beautiful today - sunshine, blue skies, wonderful snow-covered mountains as a backdrop, and great temperature.  When we got back to Portal we used the hot tub to soothe our weary bones and muscles.  Very nice!  Changed into shorts and tee-shirts.  Warmest we've been in a long time!  ::)

Phil, we ate at Eddie McStiff's tonight.  MUCH improved - no cigarette smoke and they've cleaned up the place.  Looks much better than our last foray there.  Glad you signed up.
