Thinking about buying a 1994 30ft Safari Kalihari with a 5.9L cummins mated to a 4 speed allison. This all sits on a OshKosh frame with Leafsprings and shocks  up front.along with airbags  Questions are is this a decent setup? asking price is 19000 with 53000 miles  Is there anyone that owns or has owned one? Whats the idea behind the front Leafs? Ride quality? MPG? thanks for any info    Bill

Decent enough for its vintage, I think. It's not going to perform like the more modern turbo-diesels with 6 speed Allisons, but it should do ok. The Kalihari was available with either a 190 or 230 hp engine, so check to see what this one has. The 230 is noticeable better in performance, but on a 30 footer the 190 may be sufficient.

The front leaf spring suspension was just the basic chassis of the time. Higher end rigs had air suspension and the lower end models got springs. That's still true today. It's a matter of cost/price, not function or ride.

I think the $19k price is high. NADA gives a range of $11k-%14.5k for the 230 hp model and $12k tops for the 190 hp. Condition is everything at that age, however. I'd make a lower offer.
