Are you an amateur astronomer and have an RV? Have I got a job for you!
I just spent a month at the McDonald Observatory, and anyone who follows me
is sure to have as much fun and come away feeling more connected than ever
to the universe around us. Here's the scoop:
In West Texas, 16 miles from Fort Davis, in a place with some of the darkest
night skies in the U.S., is one of the world's preeminent observatories,
doing research into the deepest mysteries of the universe. Besides the
important research being done there, McDonald is well-known as the most
visitor-friendly observatory in the world. The Frank Bash Visitors Center
has an active public outreach program that attracts tens of thousands of
visitors each year. During the day, tourists can visit the two largest
telescopes to see up close (and see demonstrations with) the instruments
that are changing the way we think about the cosmos and ourselves. Three
nights a week, hundreds of visitors come to "star parties" hosted by the
Visitors Center where they get a chance to look through telescopes at the
rings of Saturn, the craters of the moon, and beautiful deep-sky objects
like star clusters, nebulae and distant galaxies.
McDonald Observatory needs a few talented volunteers who would like to be a
part of this exciting work for a month or more. In exchange for 20 hours a
week of work, you will be provided with a site with full hook-ups in the
resident's area of the property. Professional astronomer not needed, just
someone who knows their way around a telescope.
