This may be too late for your October trip, but we recently stayed at the Burnidge Forest Preserve/ Paul Wolff Campground in Elgin, IL about 40 miles northwest of Chicago. It's a beautiful campground with 50 amp service and water spigots scattered that you can hook up to if it's not too busy. I'm pretty sure they stay open until October 31. The sites are very large, paved, level and quiet. There are hiking trails. Good cell service. 2 convenient dump stations. I believe it's $25.00 per night.
