We have a Coca-Cola convention in Las Vegas starting Feb 10 and will be in DV until then. We may go back to DV after the Coke convention.

Wendy:   Shirley and I are holding off till late February on Death Valley.   We have a weekend rally near Houston from 17th to 20th and will then head out there.  Where will you be staying when you return after your convention?    We want to make sure we get in the flowers.   We will be meeting a group of photographers back at White Sands on the 17th of March.

If we go back to DV after the Coke convention, we'll probably stay part of the time at Furnace Creek and part of the time at Mesquite up by Scotty's Castle. Looks like it might be a good wildflower year but you never know.

Sounds like a good plan to us. The CG north of town may have reps at the Big Tent passing out discount coupons, I think they were at FMCA-Redmond.

Wendy:    Shirley and I have had to delay.   We will be headed to Death Valley around the 21st of February and plan to arrive around the 24th maybe.  If you will be back there, where will you be staying.  I haven't made any plans for campgrounds yet.  We will probably remain in the area till around the 12th of March.   I will be leading a group of photographers for a shoot at White Sands, NM the 17th to the 20th of March.   We need to head home after that to get ready for for upcoming Wildflower Scramble in the Texas Hill Country.

Ron, If we go back to DV after the Coke convention (I want to go back but haven't quite convinced the driver yet) we'll be back there around Jan 15 and stay a couple of weeks, maybe longer if the flowers are good. We usually stay at Sunset campground part of the time and at Mesquite (up by Scotty's Castle) part of the time; Stovepipe Wells c.g. is also a possibility as it's closer to the Wildrose/Telescope Peak area and there are a couple of canyons up that way we haven't done. But our plans are set in jello and are subject to change at any time :)

Thanks Wendy.   How crowded will the campgrounds be?   I think only one gives reservations.  Is that true?

Furnace Creek campground takes reservations. It's the nicest of the NPS campgrounds...fire rings, trees, tables It does fill occasionally, especially on holiday weeks (Thanksgiving, Spring Break).

Sunset campground is across the street from the Visitor Center and only fills during 49ers (beginning of November). It is a giant parking lot with a dump station and restrooms. But it has sunsets and sunrises to die for.

Texas Spring, up the hill from Sunset, fills on holiday weeks and does not allow generator use. It's used mainly by tenters.

Stovepipe Wells and Mesquite campgrounds never fill up. The hookup sites at Stovepipe (I think there are 12), run by the concessionnaire, do fill up.

Furnace Creek Ranch has hookup sites for their employees. They frequently have empty sites and rent those out but they are along a side fence and they slope down. I've seen rigs in there with their front tires 8" off the ground.

If it turns out to be a good wildflower year, many of the campgrounds will be crowded in March. When we there in '05 for the Hundred-Year Bloom, only Furnace Creek filled. Sunset was very crowded during spring break but didn't fill.

We will be in DV, sans trailer, on Feb 1 thru 3.   This time we are staying at the Ranch At Furnace Creek and would like to look you folks up while we are there.   Where are you all intending to camp -- Furnace Creek RV park?

Update:
We will be leaving Qtz on Sunday 1/30 and going to Terrible's in Pahrump for 2 nights (1/30 and 1/31). They said they have plenty of space but several have made reservations, 1-888-558-5253. Then into DV and Sunset Campground on 2/1.

Wendy,

Unfortunately, you can remove Linda and my name from your Death Valley list of attendees. I held out hope that I would be recovered enough to be able to make the trip, however, that has not happened. We were really looking forward to making the trip with the group. It looks like we will have to make the trip in a later year.

So I guess you're saying we can't have our flowers and sunshine too!

ArdraF
Actually the best wildflower years occur when there is very heavy rain in November, then February is spectacular for wildflowers. So you must have them both, just not at the same time.

I am dying to go to the race track since I have been to DV many times and never seen it. If I do go to this rally I could meet up with brens and possibably Tom J for some photo tips. So I am a possible definite maybe at the moment to head out to DV instead of Tucson.

Tom that would be great. I'm a working stiff so I could go only for the weekend of the 5th. I bought the camera and 3 new lens but need to now learn how to operate it!

The closest campground to Scottys Castle is Mesquite Spring, about 4 miles from Scottys. Nice spot, very quiet. No hookups but does have a dump station, water, and restrooms.

Tom - I have to stop in Vegas and take care of business then I will head to DV and probably be there by Thursday. I will probably stay at least 10 days to two weeks. Then after that I will be going back to Vegas and then down to Tucson. You'll find me eventually.

They used to rent out rooms in the Castle but not since the National Park Service purchased it. Sorry Tom :)

I wasn't planning on actually telling them I would be spending the night there. Just hide under the bed until the place closes.
