Museums with Railroading In Mind

I enjoy trains, the historical aspects of them as well as seeing what our fore fathers were involved in on a daily basis, obviously much different  than today's railroading which mainly involves bulk shipments.

Here is a list of museums that you may come across in your travels that may be worthwhile. We have only been to about ten percent of these so we have much more to explore. If you have stopped at any of these, can you post your experience as I would love to be able to "prioritize" those to visit.

I am NOT  a train buff but I vividly recall number 017 on your list.  The Train display/Museum in Sacramento California could turn one into a train fanatic.  It is very informative, impressive and interesting.  Well worth the visit.

If you are in Connecticut visiting the museums listed, you may want to take a ride on the Essex Steam Train - Essex, CT.  It's a really nice ride up the Connecticut River Valley, and connects with a riverboat that you can ride up the Connecticut River to East Haddam, which is where the somewhat famous Goodspeed Opera House is located.  The riverboat takes you back to the train, which takes you back to Esses.  The whole deal takes about three or four hours.  Here is the link to their website:

We have done this several times and it's a very enjoyable half day.  The Black Seal restaurant in downtown Essex is one of our favorites also - well worth the visit!

As Betty said #017 in Sacramento is great.  I might add they have the best restored mail car around.  You know what I mean, from the 1900s to almost the 1950s when the mail moved between cities by trains with the hooks that could pick up a mail bag and drop them off with stopping.  As I learned, the mail was even sorted in the car which was actually a fully operational Post Office.  You'll love it.

017 - California State Railroad Museum - Sacramento, CA

Like Betty said, not to be missed.

Also their "branch" museum, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, Jamestown, CA.  Roundhouse and yard, several original buildings, steam and diesel excursions.  "Hollywood's Railroad" used in everything from "My Little Chickadee" to "High Noon", "Petticoat Junction" to "Back to the Future".

045 - East Ely Railway Museum

Part of the Nevada Northern Railway Museum.  Restored 1890s vintage sandstone passenger terminal - used today as the terminal for the Ely Ghost Train steam and diesel excursions.

111 - Nevada Northern Railway Museum

"The best preserved short line railroad in America".  When Kendicott Copper closed their Ruth open pit mine and McGill smelter, they literally walked away from the railroad that hauled ore from mine to smelter, then from smelter northward to the transcontinental main line near today's I-80.  They donated the entire operation to the town of Ely, today it's a Nevada State Park.  Original shop, roundhouse, car barns.  Coal tower, passenger terminal and switchyard.  Steam and diesel excursions most days during the summer.  Well worth the trip along the "Loneliest Road in America", US 50.

075 - Illinois Railway Museum, Union, IL

Fantastic place!  Over 250 acres with vintage railcars, steam and diesel engines and electric streetcars.  Several large carbarns sorted by engine and car type and vintage.  Trolley line winds through the property so you don't have to walk from place to place.  5 mile main line demonstration railroad.

116- Niles Canyon Railway Museum, Sunol, CA

Niles Canyon was part of the original rail route from the Central Valley into the San Francisco area.  Niles Canyon runs steam and diesel excursions along this route, including along parts of the original Transcontinental Railroad.

135 - Orange Empire Railway Museum - Perris, CA

Steam, diesel train and electric streetcar museum.  Runs trolley cars around the museum, excursion trains from the museum into town and back.  Several large car barns arranged by type and vintage of car.

160 - San Francisco Cable Car Museum - San Francisco, CA

Motorhouse for the San Francisco Cable cars.  View the original equipment that runs the cable cars by pulling cables under the streets.  Displays of cable car history.

188 - Train Collectors Assn - Strasburg, PA

Extensive model railroad exhibit modeling the area in and around Strasburg.  Worth the stop.

Strasburg is also home to the Pennsylvania State Railroad Museum, an extensive and well displayed indoor collection ranging from a working replica of the original Tom Thumb engine through modern equipment.  Well worth a visit.

Directly across the street from the State Museum is the Strasburg Rail Road, a 10 mile steam excursion train passing through the Pennsylvania Amish country.  Also worth the trip.

200 -Western Railway Museum

Privately funded electric streetcar and interurban museum, primarily focused on San Francisco and Sacramento streetcar history.  10 mile electrified demonstration railroad.  My favorite museum, of course I may be biased as I've been volunteering there for the past 10 years or so ...

At the first train museum or whatever that you get to, pick up a book that has information on the trains, museums and such in the US.  I picked up my latest one in Hill City SD last year.  I think they are updated every year or so.  Mine is in the MH and it is cold outside.    :'(

Also if anyone is out in Nebraska, a need to see is the Bailey yard in North Platte.  WOW

There is a nice little railway museum in Duluth, GA.  I believe the name is the Southeastern Train Museum

Here is the Greeley Freight Station Museum web page, for Greeley, CO. A very nice (about 5500 sq. ft.) HO model RR layout. Love it.
Don't forget the museums you can ride, such as the Cumbres & Toltec RR (Chama, NM), the Durango & Silverton RR (Durango, CO), the Georgetown Loop RR (Georgetown, CO), the Cripple Creek & Victor RR (Cripple Creek, CO), the Leadville, Colorado & Southern RR (Leadville, CO) and the Grand Canyon Railway (Williams, AZ), to name just a few.

Note that the Cumbres RR may not yet be open after the fire they had on one of the RR bridges, but the RR yard in Chama is a fascinating place (almost a museum itself), and you're normally allowed to roam that yard freely, looking in the engine house, watching trains moving around the yard, a lot of old rolling stock, and much more.

I want to let all the railfans out there know about a TV program called "Trains and Locomotives".  It's on RFDTV (DirecTV channel 345) on Monday evenings from 6 to 7PM eastern time. 

And for you DISH users it is on Monday at 5 pm on 231, RFD and again on Tuesday at 2 AM.

We are currently at Canyon Motel & RV Park in Williams, AZ, roght on old Rt 66.  They  have rooms they rent that are convertred cabooses and such, railroad memorabilia etc.  Nive big pull thru sites, full hookups and part of CampClub.  About $17 change a night.  Just a mile into town with many neat little shops and great ribs.

Number 200 on the alphabetized list is a must visit if you are ever in the area. They have working Shay type engines (unique design with all wheels driven) that climb steep grades with a switchback. It's an old logging rail center that still uses the original tracks up the mountain.

Someone want a good project?  Take Chet's railroad museum list and add website links to it.  If you were real serious, you could add GPS coordinates (latitude/longitude).  You might even talk Tom into making it a sticky.
