Hi All.

I have a class B, and I am thinking about driving from So Cal to an area around San Antonio. I have been invited to part take of Christmas with a large ranch family in that area.

I want to get there fast, but then wander back. I need suggestions for the first part of the trip ( ie Walmarts, rest stops, etc) and then for the way back neat RV parks, attractions, good stops.

Budget is somewhat limited, I am a retiree.

The Davis Mountains State park in west Texas is great.  http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/davis_mountains/

A visit to the McDonald Observatory is a must and try to go to a "start party" one night.  http://www.as.utexas.edu/mcdonald/

Also, take some time to drive the 74 mile scenic loop.  You are close also to Marfa where you can view the Mystery Lights.

Enjoy our great state and don't forget how close to Big Bend you will be.

Depending from where is Southern CA you are coming; for the fastest way to get to the San Antonio area, get onto 1-10 and just keep going east till you get to good old, San Antone!!

For coming back, do not miss Big Bend and all the other suggestions from elkhartjim. Remember Texas is big and there are lots to see and do.

Tombstone and Bisbee AZ are interesting sidetrips from I-10.  Karchner Caverns, I am told are worth the seeing:  http://www.pr.state.az.us/parks/KACA/

Karchner Caverns are definitely worth the visit. Both chambers are spectacular. It is all part of the State Park, with a very nice campground - water and electric hookups.

Carlsbad Cavern Nat'l Park in Carlsbad, NM. Obtain a National Park Pass to cut down on expenses of getting into national parks. Details here  http://usparks.about.com/od/usnationalparks/p/park_passes.htm

Hello all.  New member here.  I may be too late in responding to this post, but we just got back from this exact trip.  We arrived back in the Los Angeles area on December 7th, having traveled to San Antonio and back.  We were in San Antonio for our daughter's graduation from basic training at Lackland AFB.

Anyhow, the OP asked about places to stay along the way to San Antonio.  Our first night out, we stayed in Benson, AZ at the super Walmart center.  The second night we stayed at Walmart in Fort Stockton, TX.  That broke those first two days up into very doable 520 mile legs.  The third day was then an easy 300+ mile leg.  While in San Antonio, we stayed at the Admiralty RV park, which is just across highway 151 from Sea World.  Nice park and nice people.  Plus the rates were reasonable in our opinion.

I don't know the area much on the way back, with the exception of Tombstone and Bisbee, which someone already mentioned.  We make a trip to that area about every other year and spend a week there.  We highly recommend the side trip.  Next time through the area, we're going to try to get up to Goldfield for another side trip.

Like I wrote earlier, this information may be way too late, but hopefully someone will find it interesting.
