According to the directions the thermostat sensor is supposed to be attached to the hot water tank.  i can't  access the the tank while it is installed, and so I was wondering if it is much of a job to slide the tank out for easy access?

Can't you expose a bit of the surface near where the heater's own thermostat and ECO are located? Usually there is just a sort of cardboard over insulation in that area. I don't think they intended the tank to be removed to install this device.

Sliding the tank out would depend on how much slack there is in the attached water lines on the back side. Typically not much. If you can access the back side, you can disconnect the lines, though.

Thanks for your suggestions.  I will look at it closer to see if I can attach it without sliding it out.

The Easiest place to attach it is the Pressure relief Valve. Just attach it using a couple of Zip/Zap Straps!
