Dune pics
« on: December 10, 2010, 02:39:47 PM »
Here are a couple pictures of our toys in the dunes.  These were taken from last spring when on a trip to the Little Sahara Recreation area in Utah.  Thanks for looking, Mike.

Finally, somebody elso that thinks like me. Everyone says the Quadzilla already has plenty of power, but I agree with you, streetbike engines do belong in quads.
Don't worry, if your parachute fails, you have the rest of your life to fix it.

with quads having that much power you should check out St. Anthony's in eastern Idaho it's near Rexburg. Great hill climbing! I haven't been in about 10 years and don't forget to re-jet for 5k feet.

St. Anthony's is where we usually dune.  We only make it to Little Sahara once or twice a year but we go to St. Anthony, Id about 4-6 times a year.  We like it much better and much more relaxing/enjoyable.  I sold the green GS powered Suzuki last fall and I am in the process of building a sandrail.  We hope to have it on the sand in the next few weeks.  I just got the chassis back from powder coating and all of the chrome/aluminum back and I am doing the final assembly.  Planning on making a trip after it is completed.  Mike.

Mike,

A dumb question, after looking at the picture of the rig with the trailer, but how does the rig do pulling something in that sand? Will it stay up on the sand pretty well without bogging?

To be honest I try not to find out.  In that picture it may look like I am sitting on the sand, however, I am only off the pavement about  30' and it is roadbase/gravel with sand that has blown across the gravel.  There are areas where it is not so obvious as to where the gravel is or not and I try to avoid those areas.

A couple of years ago when we went up to St. Anthony sand dunes a friend of ours was merely turning into his site and only went about two tire widths off the hard packed road and sunk his 39' Dutch Star right to the axle.  We had to unhook his trailer and have someone drag it away from the coach so we could work on getting his coach out without damage.  What a PITA!

I don't think there has been a weekend I have been to Little Sahara dunes when I have not seen someone stuck.  It's funny because most of the people with the larger coaches have been going to the dunes long enough to know where to park and where to stay away from.  Most of people that I see stuck are younger people/couples with their big toyhaulers who think because they have a 4 wheel drive diesel pickup pulling their trailer they can go anywhere.  Mike.

Well, I have had our sandrail done for two years now and haven't posted any pictures of it.  Here are a couple pictures of it done just backed out of the shop and a couple of it on the sand at St. Anthony's sand dunes in Idaho.

The rail took me 7 months to build start to finish.  I built a chassis jig in the shop and then fabricated the entire chassis from scratch as well as most everything else on the car.  Many, many one off parts were built and incorporated into this build.

Here is a complete build thread on the construction of our rail.
